I'm sure abuse by his father and a strict Jehovah's Witness upbringing factors in somewhere.

Is there another music figure alive today that would have garnered the
attention/discussion that MJ is doing right now?

Springsteen? Jagger? Prince? I love all those guys far more than I ever liked
MJ, but I have to admit, their passing wouldn't have had anywhere near the
impact MJ's death has. I was not a fan of MJ and his music post puberty, but
his combination of talent and weirdness made for the perfect storm of post-
death hysteria.

Just try to count how many magazine covers he will appear on in the next
month....

I've been more affected by Jackson's death than I thought I would be. It feels like someone carved a chunk of my childhood out of my guts. Thriller was the first album my parents ever bought for me, after all. (And as much as everything Jackson did after that sounds like disposable assembly-line electronic pop to me, Thriller is still mostly great.)

Springsteen? Jagger? Prince?

I would think so.  Especially Mick Jagger.

I feel like... all those people you listed would get a reaction - Prince's death would shock the world in only that it would prove he was human, which I still am not sure about.  (Nor do I believe His Royal Purple Badness will ever die, so don't even talk about it.  George Michael, on the other hand...)

But as much of a reaction as they would get, some people get more of one.  Lennon got a deserved reaction because he was the first Beatle to die - the Beatles being the biggest band ever (sorry Stones!) - and also how it happened.  When George passed, it was sad, but more fitting and we saw it coming, so more of a less-stunned reaction.

Michael Jackson, like it or not, has the biggest selling record of all-time, and to people of my generation, like it or not (and I hate him back in the Thriller days, by the way), he was a part of our lives.  He wasn't just a guy on the radio or a musician we're a fan of (or not) - he was more than that.

I surely think that Bruce Springsteen is a better musician, but.. at this point, he's old enough to die, and there's not the same in-depth connection with him as there was with MJ.

I love U2 and would be sad if Bono or Edge died (ok, ok, Larry and Adam too) - but at this point, they're old enough to die.  It wouldn't be shocking.  It would just be sad.

etc...

If Prince were to have died suddenly last night I think there would be A
LOT of media coverage, but not the type of coverage you are seeing now.
Nobody likes Prince more than I do, but he isn't quite the icon that MJ
was. Which shows you how freekin' HUGE MJ's impact is. Prince is truly
weird, but its a kind of weird that most people can get next to and chalk
it up to 'celebrity'. And his music is FAR MORE challenging than MJ's, so
by nature Prince is not made for mass consumption. MJ was weird in the
way that makes you want to call doctors and stuff! He stirred up SO
MANY emotions and opinions. He has been in front of the public eye for
probably 85% of his ENTIRE LIFE!

Think about it. A possible pedophile who just happens to be adored by
millions and millions of people?!?! Amazing. Sad and amazing.

Prince, et al would get the kind of coverage MJ is getting simply as an excuse for the media to air coverage

Good question about the funeral.  I was just talking with my co-workers about taking a road trip down for it.

According to this report, Jackson is said to have owed at least $300 million dollars.
