One thing I noticed about Dave Cockrum's cover and Dave's original art. The chandalier is different in the final product. Who would have been responsible for erasing Dave's original chandalier and drawing a new one?•• In those days before Photoshop, it would likely have been done on a stat, not by erasing anything on the original (as we can see since the original still exists!). As to why…

That's a nice cover by Dave Cockrum but John Byrne's is a far better version!

Sorry, Jason, I didn't read back far enough; my reply should have been directed to Tshombe's post, not yours.
You're right about today's covers; they're only good (barely) for telling you whose goddamn book it is -- no hint of story that might actually make you want to buy the feckin' thing (no "WTF?!?" moment, as it were, unless WTF stands for "Why The F*ck should I spend $4 on this?").

Awesome! This is just perfect! And yes, this is mine.
For the curious:
This didn't start out as a reimagining of X-Men 102. Colossus is probably my favorite X-Man and Juggernaut my favorite X-Villain. Byrne is the best Colossus artist so this battle was a natural for me to have JB cook up in a commission. Anyway, as I contemplated the piece I decided I wanted to add another character to the mix thinking this might be my only X-Men themed piece. I tossed around ideas with Jim Warden and it was he who suggested this cover for a reimagining. His suggestion was perfect for what I was looking for! I'm so pleased that Wolverine got thrown in there! That helps me with my next commission request.

Congrats Joe! JB outdid himself again. You were wise to throw ideas at Jim. He is a master at these commissions things!

Very cool, Joe. I really like hearing how people arrived at the decision for
their commissions. I hope you guys can tell us more about why you choose
what you choose.

I'll add a little more to that about myself. I started out with a reimagining of the most comic cover with the most sentimental value to me (Marvel Team-Up 68). When I decided to go for another commission, I went with another cover reimagining (JK4W #17). At the time I thought this might be my "theme". I got so into the New Gods characters that I diverged and got a whole series of those! Once I scratched that itch I decided to try to cover all the major characters JB is associated with. This piece covers the X-Men for me. Up next......? To be continued....

In honor of my latest commission, I read the first appearance of Juggernaut this afternoon from X-MEN #12.
X-Men 12 Spoiler warning:
What a great debut! I can't think of another villain that got as good a build up in their first appearance (maybe Galactus....been awhile since I read that one). The whole issue is Professor X telling the story of how his half-brother became the unstoppable Juggernaut while this (mostly) unseen force makes its way towards the X-mansion right through all their defenses. Finally Juggernaut gets there, dispatches of all the X-Men with a single swipe of his arms and is left face-to-face with a seemingly defenseless Professor X. To be continued! Great comic!
