Once SCHISM has been published, the whole Romulan Saga that began in ALIEN SPOTLIGHT will be collected into a trade paperback. There's one "chapter" missing, of course, and that's the original "Balance of Terror" episode. So, for the trade, I am doing a Romulan's side "adaptation" of that episode. Here's a sneekpeek at what is not, after all, a "surprise ending"!
(For those unfamiliar, that's the lettering placement guide.)

Sweet! Just saw that episode for the first time this summer! That adaptation should make it well worth the price of the trade!

Altho it is transparently little more than a WW2 destroyer/submarine duel transplanted to space, Mark Lenard's performance as the Romulan Commander elevates "Balance of Terror" into the top ten favorite TOS episodes, for me.Plus, the production designs are pretty cool, given the $1.98 budget restrictions.

Budget's tight, but I'll be getting this one when its finished. "Balance" has long been my favorite episode, although I wasn't fond of the writing for Spock. I understood why it was that way, but its still hard to see him making that mistake on the bridge. It adds to the tension, and he's the only one it makes sense for it to happen to, but Spock would not have made that mistake.

I'm getting the individual issues but I am also getting the trades, so this is a nice addition. Should be a lot of fun to sit down and read the whole thing.
Edited for clarification.

Did they ever go back and explain how Spock seemed to know nothing about the existence of Romulans in this episode?

Awesome!
Just watched the episode the other day, since I'm making my way through the TOS season 1 Blu-Ray set. Still a great episode. Very moody, with solid performances.

Did they ever go back and explain how Spock seemed to know nothing about the existence of Romulans in this episode?•• Seems like that was covered in the episode. No one knew what Romulans looked like, and whenever their break with Vulcan had occurred, it was long enough ago that there was no record of it.

Oh, ok. I guess I was under the impression that later on it was treated as if the history of the Romulans was known by everyone (or at least the Vulcans I guess). Thanks for the response, JB.

Most of the TREK iterations since TOS have seemed to have as their mandate wiping out the original series. As presented in "Balance of Terror", however, the Romulans were a big mystery to everyone.

That episode presents some really interesting pre-TOS history, history that comes in second only to "Space Seed" for me.
There was an Earth-Romulan war a century before TOS, perhaps resulting from an attempted Romulan invasion. Other races may have been involved, as allies to either side. There was no visual communication between humans and Romulans, so neither side ever saw the other face-to-face. The battle was fought with primitive nuclear weapons, and the Romulan ships sported the bird motif. A treaty was eventually agreed upon by both sides over subspace radio, and the fighting ended. The Neutral Zone was established, and, until "Balance of Terror", no ship from either side broke the treaty.
Now THAT would be an interesting story to tell!
Of course, ENTERPRISE dealt with some elements of this backstory by showing that Romulans had infiltrated the Vulcan High Command, as well as featuring NX-01's encounter with a Romulan ship.

And according to Manny Coto at the Vegas con this past weekend, they had
planned to continue with the lead-in to the Romulan War and the seeds of
the Federation afterwards had ENTERPRISE continued on with a fifth season:

"Balance of Terror" is easily one of my favorite TOS episodes. I really look
forward to this adaptation.

Also nice to see that JB is continuing TOS' tradition of viewscreens that use 3-D and pan/zoom/tilt technology.

Looks great. Will this be a regular length comic, The Balance of Terror story, and when will the trade be published? I am enjoying your Trek and Angel series, nice to see this other side of your work.
