Sorry if I added to the confusion here - I don't know how this day works in the States. In Canada it is Remembrance Day, and very much about soldiers lost in the World Wars and in wars since then. SInce there is a thread that I started about that I thought from this thread that a shout-out to some of the JBF'ers was alright. I really appreciate Bob's point, and Chris has summed it up very well.

Sacrifice does not necessarily mean losing one's life. There are other sacrifices involved when one joins the military. Also, I was not trying to turn this into a "support the troops" thing as Mr. Hutton stated. You're reading into my initial post too deeply. My intent was to thank fellow veterans, that's all. Al, there was no confusion. I noticed your thread and read that it referred to Rememberance Day and I just thought that I'd start a thread to honor Veterans Day. Thank you for your "shout-out".

Veterans Day is always a good excuse to call my dad, who fought in Vietnam.

I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free. I heard the sound of TAPS one night, When everything was still I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That TAPS had meant "Amen," When a flag had draped a coffin Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn't free.

Scott, I wasn't singling you out, but after all the rhetoric of the Bush administration, I feel that the TRUE meaning of these holidays has been lost in an attempt to "support the troops."

It's my own little "Don Quixote" moment. I know that my loan voice won't change things, but I have to say how I feel.

Sometimes when I drive by some place displaying one of those ubiquitous yellow ribbons that say "Support the troops", I think about stopping in to ask exactly how they support the troops. But then I know the answer already -- the yellow ribbon is often the extent of their support.
At least they aren't spitting on us and calling us "baby killer". (I had that happen to me in the '90s!)
Here's to my dad (Army), a bunch of uncles (more Army), some cousins (Army & Air Force) and my brother (Marines)!

I've had honored family members from several generations serve in every branch of the armed forces and fortunately none in recent memory have died in combat, including those who served in WWII and Vietnam. Being a Veteran (91-A as well), I would hope that everyone (veterans and non-veterans alike) would take just a moment to give thoughts and prayers to all past & current veterans that they should be appreciated for their thoughtless bravery and honor.
I consider it a privilege to be amongst them.
