I hated it, too. Long, slow, boring. There were some amusing surprises like the moon pirates and the face-eating space monkeys, but the second hour was just tedium.

I think I saw the Moon Pirates open for the Face-Eating Space Monkeys back in '97.

Gemini Man: predictable and predictably terrible, but also very entertaining. It teeters on being so-bad-it's-good but doesn't quite commit. It's like someone challenged Ang Lee to make as preposterous a film as possible while still phoning it in. (Although it's... interesting how Lee constructed an action movie around camera angles that look like they were framed by film students -- lots of close two-shots and over-the-shoulder dialogue.) There's a third act un-twist so lame and uninspired it's almost ballsy:

JOJO RABBIT: Props to Taika Waititi. He could have done anything after directing a movie that grossed $850 million, and he chose to godfather a tv show for his friends and direct a comedy about Adolph Hitler. Waititi mostly plays Hitler as a buffoon, yet at times unleashes a scarily precise and studied simulacration. The movie flies by, so much so that like the main character, I didn't realize it stopped being a comedy until about ten minutes too late. It's very imperfect -- think Wes Anderson directing LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL-- but worth seeing.

Me, again.

THE IRISHMAN: I journeyed 18 miles to worship at the altar of cinema with Martin Scorsese one last time. Worth it. The expensive digital de-aging didn't bother me, partially because it transformed Robert De Niro from old as hell to just old. The cinematography is wonderfully composed, but not beautiful, and the film itself lacks the cocaine-inspired intensity of Goodfellas, or the literal cocaine-fueled intensity of Scorsese's New Hollywood classics, but it's a film about an old man, by an old man, so it works. The only time it dragged was the last 15 minutes, because at that point it had been 3 frickin hours already, man. It was great to see the so much of the gang together again, including Joe Pesci and the babysitter from Goodfellas. This is foremost a movie about friendship, and there's so much good stuff between De Niro and Al Pacino. And it was funny. I recommend.

Last Christmas. Not bad at all, I thought! The critics have been a bit bah-humbug about this one, but I enjoyed it and was glad I went.

Emilia Clarke got a bit of criticism at times for her acting in Game of Thrones, but I thought she was excellent in this. I hereby award her this year's Roger Moore trophy for most mobile eyebrows in cinema this year.

Also enjoyed its use of George Michael's music, particularly Heal the Pain, with which Theodore Shapiro does wonderful things in his score.

Hahaha got a good chuckle out of me with that one, David.

I think we got enough of all the kinds of cocaine-fueled intensity in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, so I guess we're good. 

Looking forward to see the film.
