A look at a work in progress, the first 20x30 inch piece for 2010. This is revisiting the first Avengers Annual, actually dubbed a KING SIZED SPECIAL.

Guess this would count as another "action montage", since none of the battles occurred at the same time, in the same place. (A challenge I set myself was to try, if possible, to pair up heroes and villains as they appeared in the actual story. Mostly successful!)

I'll modify the date in the thread title to reflect the day the piece is actually finished.

Wow!!

Do you sometimes find yourself spending a lot of time wondering how to place the characters in relation to one another or, after so many years of doing it, does it just come by naturally, so to speak?

Mostly it "comes naturally", tho with the "challenge" I set myself for this one, there was some planning necessary. Basically, in this case, I worked from the top down*, beginning with the looming figure of the Mandarin, and then spotting the other figures according to a combination of their pairings and the amount of space they would occupy.

*Which is the reverse of how I will ink it!

By the way, I think this is the first time I saw you draw the classic version of the  Mandarin, JB! Nice!

That looks like it'll be amazing!

But then again, anytime you put the Swordsman in something I'm going to be happy!

I sure miss the days when the Marvel Universe was smaller and the annuals were actual events like this one.

King-Size Special #2 was a lot of fun with the original Avengers vs. the current Avengers from that time period.

Not planning to. Might "spoil the surprise"!
