Oh absolutely. It's not really about liking or disliking it - which is a matter of personal taste (I actually both like and dislike parts of it). But it changed the way some people thought comics should be and it still has that strong hold over many high-profiled creators today. I see it in basically everything I've read that has the name Mark Millar attached to it, for example.

It's very possible to like something and still regret the amount of influence it's had. I feel that way about THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

"We're" not doing anything.  Some people are.  Some people aren't.  Contrary to popular opinion, we're not a hive mind here nor do we require that everyone follow lockstep.  If you want to type M*****, go ahead.  If you want to type Marvel, knock yourself out.  Pretty simple.  No harm, no foul.

I liked both until I realized the deleterious effects both had on comics overall.

I have to wonder if when Frank Miller and Alan Moore produced DKR and Watchmen if they ever intended for them to be such a huge influence on the comic book industry.

It seems to me, it is other people who have taken the themes and ideas presented in these mini-series, and tried to incorporate them in to every avenue they can in comics as this is the only way they think comics can be done now.

I say it's a swerve. I'll guess that The Blob is joining the X-Men and it's ketchup we're seeing on that symbol.

Man, I could SO run Marvel.

 QUOTE:
Not as long as the audience is made up of fans who hate superheroes (and women, apparently) almost as much as Alan Moore does

Aw, for fuck's sake... Even a quick skim of Moore's oeuvre will show that he loves super-heroes. Supreme was practically a love letter to the Silver Age Superman. Just because someone doesn't appreciate a character exactly the way you do doesn't mean they "hate" it.

A quick skim, yes. Actually reading the material might produce another verdict.

I actually kind of agree with Patrick. We shouldn't crucify Moore for twelve comics he wrote in the back in the 80's. But how the comics industry has relentlessly aped the Watchmen is pathetic and self-destructive.

You really see WATCHMEN as somehow at odds with the rest of Moore's output?

If we do not judge a man by his past deeds (or his works), then how can we possibly get a true measure of the man today?
