The character was also Indian (not Native American, making me wonder if he thought he was somehow keeping the "Indian" aspect of the original Thunderbird somehow....).

That's what I thought at the time too, Vinny.

Wasn't there a post on here a year or so ago about the real Kitty auctioning off the original art or comic JB sent her?

Wow. I sure wish things had gone the way JB suggested at the bottom of
that page.

It's also mentioned here in a summary of
FANTASTIC FOUR #203.

Thinking about my first exposures to Kitty, I've got to say that the one thing Chris Claremont did right was that he embraced the soap opera.  Kitty and Peter.  Scott and Jean.  Professor X and Liandra.  Wolverine and Mariko.  Later, Storm and Forge, Rogue and Gambit.  As a kid on the cusp of becoming a man, all the thwarted romance sub-plots were absolutely captivating.  Say what you like about the purple-prose and any other weakness of the man's story-telling skills, he was dead-on with the ability to get young guys to really care about the characters.  I think that element is just flat-out non-existent today.

I love the note at the top, sounded like a protective dad:

"Measurements: (Never you mind! She's too young for you anyway!)"

JB, given the note here about the second team concept, does it ever bother you to see the "New Mutants created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod" credit?

Nope. When I heard about the New Mutants, the first thing I did was arrange a "handshake deal" in which I would make no claims to them if Chris would make no claims to Alpha Flight.

FANTASTIC FOUR #203.

••

The story that perfectly encapsulated for me what had gone astray with the FF -- with the conjuring of a "monstrous" version of. . . the Thing!!

Twelve Years Later.

Ah, that handshake deal! I make no claims on the New Mutants, Chris makes no claims on Alpha Flight.

And which group gets a movie………?

Give it time. Probably won’t be long until a movie is made.
