I'm curious to find out what many of you (particularly JB)
thinks of "The Hitch."

I'm a fan, have three of his books, and enjoy listening to
his various debates and interviews. He never fails to be
entertaining, informative and funny.

Half the time I'd probably disagree with him on the color of the sky but I love his writing. I've realy enjoyed his appearances on Real Time with Bill Maher. I've read some of his columns but never one of his books. Any recommendations?

Missionary Position is quite informative. His book on Thomas Paine is a wonderful read.

He's a bit harsh in some places, and I've certainly seen some places where I disagree, but he writes with a lot of fire in his belly. Good to see that in someone who isn't trying to sell you religion.

The fellow is a hell of a writer. You may not agree with him, but he certainly lays out a powerful and challenging case. If you know the history of the time, you'll find his book on Hank Kissinger is quite a passionate mugging.

He seems often like the Mr. Hyde to Richard Dawkins' Dr. Jekyll. I agree with most of what both have to say, tho Hitchens is at times a tad. . . strident.

His book "God is Not Great" is a pretty fun look at how ridiculous and damaging religion is. It won't tell anyone with half a brain anything they don't already know, but the journey there is quite entertaining.

Sometimes Hitchens puts his personality ahead of his point, so that can be distracting.

Strident is a good way to describe Hitchens. I think that's
what attracted me to his style--for years it seemed the
accepted norm to not be overtly forceful when debating
Christians, but Hitchens will have none of that.

When comparing Hitchens and Dawkins, it seems to me that
Hitchens enjoys the argument more and probably has a deeper
seeded grudge against religion than the other "New
Atheists" do. There is a interesting series, which can be
seen on youtube, where Hitchens, Dawkins, Dennet and one
other (apologize for forgetting) sit at a table and discuss
some very interesting topics.

For which I am inclined to applaud him. Thru-out history, religion has shown very little inclination to be anything BUT 'overtly forceful' with any who take an opposing viewpoint. It is far past time atheists took up the gauntlet that has been so many times hurled at our feet.

Which has a lot to do with my own tendency to become more evangelical on the subject.
