Corsair and The Star-Jammers? •• About them, you will have to ask Nathan -- tho they certainly didn't have much to do in the one and only issue of my run (my first) in which they appeared. (For myself -- I will admit I am glad to see them omitted from this assemblage, whether it was deliberate or Nathan merely forgot them. Shoehorning them into X-MEN took the book on its first step down a very wrong turn, one which I spent my time on the title working to get Chris away from. Scott Summers, a very ordinary guy, except for his burdensome super power -- in other words, a classic Marvel character of the period -- suddenly has parents who were kidnapped by space aliens, whose mother was made the mistress of a star emperor before being murdered by him, and whose father became a space pirate? Ugh!)

JB- Yup, I agree about not caring for Scott's space parents... and after just re-reading that issue (and agreeing the Star-Jammers do very little in that ish,) I have a question (that you've probably been asked loads already, sorry). . It was one of the reprints that added new pages (in this case the ret-conned first appearance of Dark Phoenix...) so how did you feel about these 'Special Editions'. I didn't like the extra bits, especially as the art quality drops so much as it vaguely attempts to imitate Byrne & Austin.

It was one of the reprints that added new pages (in this case the ret-conned first appearance of Dark Phoenix...) so how did you feel about these 'Special Editions'.•• Hated 'em. Chris used them to jam in, retroactively, all the "bits" I'd said "no" to. (Which is not surprising, since his first dozen or so issues after I left the book were choc-a-bloc with all the bits I'd said "no" to. Doubly not surprising, since the Mesmero/circus issue was actually something Dave had said "no" to!)

Your comments about the Star-Jammers and Scott's dad, made me wonder: When did Havoc/Alex appear? Did Cyclops always have a mutant brother?

When did Havoc/Alex appear? Did Cyclops always have a mutant brother?•• Somewhere around issue 54 o5 55. Not good with exact numbers, as many of you already know. Alex is a good example of a card that needs to be played very cautiously. "The brother you never knew I had" is something that should be used only ONCE in a series, and most especially with a character. Once a character has had a Big Reveal like that, there should be no more. No son or daughter we didn't know s/he had, no secret spouses, no parents who are anything other than ordinary. Most especially, when you have a character like Scott Summers, who has been shown to have a brother we didn't know about, who, despite not being a twin, has essentially the same power (just less focused), should not be shown to have all kinds of other skeletons in his closet.

When I first read this, I accepted it without much of a second thought. In retrospect, it does seem rather too fanciful, especially after reading the Lee/Kirby stories.

The soap opera quality of this "lost relative" device, I'd usually dislike it severely -- yet, it does rather work for Scott Summers. His having found a brother seemed not to lessen his sense of being a loner as much as added a complexity to it that remained true to who Scott had been.
I guess the fact that it worked well was a bad thing!

Dan: Corsair and The Star-Jammers? ------------ I don't really think of the Star-Jammers when it comes to JB's run. They really didn't make much of an impression on me. I had a 70 character limit (JB added a few extra characters) and I was more interested in Nanny making the cut than the Star-Jammers.
