Alan Moore's taking his farewell to the comics industry in the latest "Comic Heroes" magazine. And he does it in his usual fashion.

He makes some interesting points about the state of the industry in general, but with numerous self-congratulatory statements.

I'm not sure if I've ever read a Moore interview without some element of hypocrisy, and he's crankier than ever now. It's a little funny, a little sad. He's interesting, though. For a crank, I like him, and when it comes to the work he produces, sometimes I love him. I don't imagine one more surly interview will much change that.

What is Moore talking about when he says Superman's rights have been sold for "online gambling"? DC Universe Online?

If comics are dead, he was one of the people who helped kill them.

I agree.

What's even worse is that too many fans of his "ground breaking" comic book work, who have unfortunately turned pro and are constantly trying to be "the next Alan Moore", are too blind to see this (despite plummeting comic book sales as evidence that this is a bad direction to go in).

Well, Alan, if that is so, then I can go about helping with some sort of revival of the medium in the future, thanks to the Internet providing a small window of opportunity after all this dust settles.  Nice of him to pronounce the prognosis.  Can he write the obituary?

However, this being an excerpt from a fanzine interview, I guess we'll have to spend our money on the volume in order to read the full article.  Sometimes I wonder if these interviews are conducted so as to find their subject in the worst possible mood, just to get these grumbling comments out of them...

If Moore's so eager to pronounce an entire art form dead, then he can leave and go do something else and I can think of a few people he can take with him.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as we have JB and Joe Kubert and JRJr and Roger Stern and the Simonsons and a whole bunch of other people around as well as those who are inspired by them to try to do comics the right way again, nobody needs to write any obituaries yet.

Comics are quite well stocked, presently, with a number of people who left the industry, declaring it dead, to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

If I but had the power, that is one door I would fix so it only swung one way!
