It was Walter Simonson who wrote those issues of Avengers. Certainly some of the worst things he ever wrote. It may not be entirely his fault though.
Roger Stern had left the title a few issues before. He had just started his storyline about the Super Adaptoid taking the identity of the Fixer when Editor Mark Gruenwald has booted him. For some reason, there was an editorial conference about taking the Avengers books into a specific direction. After giving it some thought, Stern went back to Gruenwald to disagree about some specifics. It sounded like Gruenwald was behind the idea of the Avengers "falling apart" that lead up Avengers #300. He needed the team to self-destruct. Because Stern had been slowly building up his Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) over the years and finally gotten her to be Avengers Chairman, he probably didn't think it would reflect well on her. So Gruenwald just fired him off the book. After some people finished up the Super Adaptoid story, Simonson was brought on the book, and weird things started to happen. That was when Marrina died, the Sub-Mariner left the time to mourn, Dr Druid went crazy, the Black Knight became immobile; just bizarre stuff.
I always liked Marrina as a character. She had a great look, and her backstory told in Alpha Flight #2-4 added a tragic pathos that was needed. I was always hoping she'd come back.
Bill Mantlo did some good yeoman's work on other titles, but I think he just didn't understand the appeal of Alpha Flight (to be honest, no one else did as well) to her fans, and just tore the book apart.

the problem with the other writers was they chnaged the mold from 1-3 members and issue to full team issues which really made the book a carbon copy of avengers and x-men which was terrible, I've always wondered though if anyone truly had a plan for marrinas future, last thing about her I remember as I dont follow marvel anymore was that osborn brought her back made her into leviathan and had namor kill her again truly sad as marrina truly had potential

It's funny that you mention Marina being killed in Avengers, which I now recall. The funny part is I seem to remember Namor (re)killing Marina just a year ago when Osborne dispatched her (as a leviathan) to kill him. And of course a beheading was involved.

about marrina's ears? I don't think her ears were shown really with her air almost always covering them

Yeah, that's why I could never figure out whether they were pointed or not. Probably only JB and her personal physician know for sure. I saw a comic panel of her once in which her ears were visible, and they were pointed, but you never know whether that's "canonical," or if the artist just improvised.

I always assumed they were not pointed. Remember, she "imprinted" on her foster mom, who cracked open Marrina's egg, so she's a Plodex version of a human. Her non-human stuff is all related to being aquatic, like her fishy eyes and her webbed toes. Of course, there's nothing specifically "aquatic" about the yellow skin and green hair, but I still go with rounded ears.

There's nothing aquatic about pointy ears in OUR world... but Marvel's Atlanteans (Namor, Namora, Namorita...) have pointy ears, as does the aquatic monster Gargantus, and the aquatic Inhuman, Triton... so maybe there's something aquatic about pointy ears in the Marvel Universe?

I think Namor killed her using the Black Knight's ebony blade. This was while she was a giant sea creature.
