Put me  down for the non-oval camp.

I like the oval. I like that blue that was in Batman's costume as well. Exactly like Neal Adams used to draw him. I'm even crazy enough to say that the blue could even be a bit of a lighter shade of blue. Not everything has to be dark or black on Batman.

I like the stark black on grey, but the yellow oval has the
tug of nostalgia for me.

Same here. But ultimately, I prefer noval.

I like both versions. The oval-less version makes more sense, was the first one around, and just looks cool, but the oval version (particularly the stylized version as refined by Adams) is very much the Batman I grew up with.

While I like many of the different iterations by artists over the decades, thanks to my childhood memories, this is the version that auromatically springs to mind when I think of Batman--the Adams/Aparo/Garcia-Lopez look:

That said, I like both looks, so it really doesn't matter to me, I guess.

Always hated the oval, was happy to know it was abandoned.

It does not match the character to have this stupid yellow thing in his chest.

Why not? It looks almost exactly like the Bat-Signal

Most of the finest renditions of the Batman - those done in the '60's & '70's by Adams, Aparo, Brown, Infantino, and Novick - were done with the oval.  And, JB, THAT'S no baloney!

True, but in that light, I think the oval might look better if it were white.

Yes to the oval.

The Adams example above is a strong argument.

"Batman wouldn't wear that" doesn't really work for me.  It's only a hang-up if one let's it be a hang-up.

"He wasn't originally drawn that way" doesn't jive either.  See: Superman.

Ultimately, it just comes down to aesthetics and taste.  To me, the oval balances out the belt and makes the whole package work.
