Not sure that there is book that I’ve read more times, than this one.
Considering the current environment, not sure when I would read it and not
simply become depressed.

Started on Prairie Fires already and got out Dee Brown's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee as I remembered it having a slightly fuller account on Little Crow and the Minnesota revolt of 1862, and a couple more photos of Dakota leaders. My great-grandmother was a Carpenter and I see Quiners and Ingalls were intertwined with Carpenters. The other family name from back then (Wisconsin/Minnesota) was Buxton. There was a famous Captain Carpenter in the family involved in the Civil War. I see in the book a Quiner died from wounds at Shiloh.

The initial chapters offer a chilling account of what his Jewish family went through in Poland and Germany during World War II before immigrating to Canada after the war.

Never thought you were a ditz. We just have different ways we discuss certain things. All good.
Glad I could provide the recommendation. I’m nearly finished. As a Minnesota native, having lived there until I was 23, I’m fascinated by its history and the people who lived it.

Anyone wishing more information/Midwest history should read THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD by David Laskin. I read it over a decade ago and was captivated by it. It details the horrible blizzard of 1888 and how it presaged the invention of the National Weather Service. A great book. Of particular interest to those living in the Plains States or anyone with a bent to that part of the US.

I'm currently struggling mightily to make my way through It
Can't Happen Here, by Sinclair Lewis. Struggling not due
to the quality of the work or any particular stylistic
preference, but because the Trump parallels are just so
stark that I put it down in frustration. I have no doubt
that someone (or several someones) on his team have read
it, and see not as a cautionary tale, but as an instruction
manual.

HYMNS OF THE REPUBLIC — S. W. Gwynne Last year I read—twice—his excellent documenting of the R-101 disaster, HIS MAJESTY’S AIRSHIP, and seeking other examples of his work found this, a deep dive into the last year of the American Civil War.

Read IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE ten or fifteen years ago. At that time it stood as a cautionary tale. It has been most chilling to see it become prophetic.
