The NEXT MEN sequel is a go-ahead, but IDW has requested that I continue with the numbering from the previous series, so NEXT MEN: AFTERMATH, not AFTERMATH as a brand new show. Why? Because if AFTERMATH appears with a 1 on the cover, there are still some retailers who will bump the orders on that one, then slash the orders on subsequent issues. The inmates are now actually BURNING DOWN the asylum. . .

Yikes -- what a mixed up marketplace. Well, I'm so hungry for Next Men stories, I would buy it if they sold the naming rights and called it OFFICE DEPOT'S NEXT MEN: AFTERMATH. Hey, wait a minute.... it' so crazy, it just might work!!

Man, I would give a lot to see NEXT MEN sold in Office Depot! In fact, I would give a lot to see comics sold in just about ANY venues outside the DSM.*Dying by slow strangulation has never been very high on my list of Things to Do. ––– * Do you hear that? It's the whirring sound of tiny minds racing to come up with venues in which it would be utterly inappropriate to sell comics.

I hope everything goes well.I've wanted to see this story told for a while now.I'm using Midtown comics subscription service to keep up with it,and I'm purposely staying away from the Next Men threads too.
Thanks JB!!

How about THIS... how about all issues of a series be labeled with #1?

I joked about that the first time around. I said "Let's borrow from the British comics I read as a kid, and go with VOLUME numbers." So, say, January would be Volume 1, NUMBER ONE. Then February would be Volume 2, NUMBER ONE. March would be Volume 3, NUMBER ONE. And so on.

Someday, if we all pray very hard for him, our young Nathan may be able to break out of his shell. . . .

JB - just do all the issues in advance, as you normally do, but when it comes time to release them, release them 6-7 months apart instead of every 30 days.
Then, combine that with Mr. Mackie's idea that every issue be labeled with #1. In fact, make every issue of Aftermath a One-Shot Special. Then name them with titles that would reflect the issue number.
"Next Men: Aftermath" One Shot - February 6, 2013* "Aftermath: Second Coming" One Shot - May 1, 2013* "Aftermath: Third Time's the Charm" One Shot - November 13, 2013* "Aftermath: Four's a Crowd" One Shot - August 6, 2014* "Aftermath: Five Card Stud" One Shot - October 22, 2014*
*Re-solicited
It seems to work for other artists. You'll also start to get rave reviews for all the detail you're putting into your artwork, and people will say it's worth the wait because you obviously took a long time to do it. Except for issue five. They'll say that looks a little rushed because you're trying to get back on track to a bi-monthly schedule, even though your book has never been solicited or promoted as being bi-monthly, but as monthly all along.

You know, JB, I wish you would stop doing all these event comics. It's killing me having to buy all those issues you do. I only have so much money! Oh, and I second Nathan's "HELL YEAH!". I'll chance it by missing the point.

Why hasn't someone figured out how to make it so retailers don't feel like they're left holding the bag?

I'm really happy to see AFTERMATH coming in any form given the comic business being what it is today.
NEXT MEN appears to be a genuine hit!

Any design sneaks yet on the NEXT MEN AFTERMASH logo ?
Gonna be a long one for Diamond: John Byrne's Next Men Aftermath
Will they list it under "J", "N" or "A".
The current book gets listing in my ComicBase software as "Next Men (John Byrne's)", I wonder if the new one will be "Next Men Aftermath (John Byrne's)", "Next Men (John Byrne's) Aftermath", or "Aftermath (John Byrne's Next Men)

Why hasn't someone figured out how to make it so retailers don't feel like they're left holding the bag?•• Again, we must go back to the REASON the DSM was created in the first place: precisely so that retailers/dealers WOULD be "left holding the bag" -- the "bag" being a steady supply of issues that would maintain their back issue stock. Because -- one more time --THE DIRECT SALES MARKET WAS NOT CREATED TO BE THE PRIMARY VENUE. It was created as an "aftermarket". So now, again, it has been twisted, warped, morphed and basically perverted into something it was never meant to be -- AND IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.

I don't mind, I wanted it to be called Next Men : Aftermath ever since I heard about the sequel. It makes sense. Those who bought Next Men will continue to buy it. It would be horrible if it had little to do with the Next Men series. But it's not the case, right?

What I have learned about stupid people behavior -- like the issue #1 retailer ordering pattern -- is that it becomes predictable and therefore subject to adroit manipulation: an ace up a sleeve. This is a case in point. And I have no problem with Next Men continuing its numbering run. JB is young enough to at least break Kirby's run on FF. Less than 6 years to go!

It's a double edged sword. It's nice that Next Men is doing well enough that IDW thinks by keeping the name attached it will keep the sales steady. But it is a shame that the industry has a hard time supporting a "new" title. Maybe Aftermath will do well enough that you can drop the Next Men portion after a healthy run.

Great News! ....and yes, comics as we knew them are doomed. Screw it. If you keep making them then I'll keep buying them.

Comics may be doomed but it's looking very bright for the Next Men and its fans :-) I'm hoping this will eventually mean a third black and white phonebook!

I'm just hoping for enough sales of the IDW color hardcovers so they have to re-print the 1st volume AND reprint it in the correct dimensions of vol 2 and 3
