Love the textured look - kind of reminds me of John Severin or Richard Corben.

Criminy crikey!
Wow, that's easily one of my favorite commissions of the last year, maybe last several years. And I see the comparison's to Crumb, but I also sense some of that intricacy of Stephen Bissette's Swamp Thing era. DC did some black-and-white reprints of Swamp Thing in the 90s and it was amazing to see Bissette's art in the raw.
Likewise for the Sandman commission! He's a character I've always liked, but wouldn't have thought of to "headline" a commission.
I always figured Spider-Man was one of the luckier superheroes when it came to fighting him - luck being very relative of course! Specifically, I think Spider-Man's acrobatics combined with his spider-sense make him one of the few foes who can just keep a step ahead of such a dangerously amorphous foe. Even the toughest heroes seem more vulnerable because they don't have Spidey's unique "stay away from me!" power set.
A scary and cool villain, as JB captures so nicely.

The Sandman has always been one of my favorite villians. Love the montage commissions. JB captures the character's history prettty darn good in all of them. Congrats, Eric.

However you've come up with the inking style, John, it's well done. The Sandman has never looked... well, more like a sand man. I've always looked at him as one of the heavy hitters among Marvel villains. However he got knocked down, he kept coming back for more. Maybe having a body that was practically indestructible gave him a self-confidence he wouldn't have had if he risked being killed by some of what hit him. Fused into glass by an electrical charge? Grind yourself down to get your mobility back. Swept into the gutter by spray from a firehose? Chill out a bit and take your time pulling yourself back together. No wonder the guy's smiling a lot. His whole face reads "Hell, yeah! Nothing stops me."

Wow! This one is intense. The amount of detail on the main image and the piece as a whole is mind-blowing. Bravo, JB. This is truly one of your best. The addition of Paste Pot Pete doesn't hurt either.

Like Magneto, one of the appealing aspects of the Sandman, as originally portrayed, was that he was unabashedly BAD. Bad to the bone, as the song has it.When introduced, he was established as being on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Stan's shorthand for "they don't come much worse than this!" As I have mentioned before, when I was doing CHAPTER ONE I called the FBI and asked what it took to get on that list. Mostly, I was told, it was terrorists, multiple murders, and child killers. In other words, not someone you might expect to find starring, a few years after his debut, in "Have Yourself a Sandman Little Christmas" in MARVEL TEAM-UP. With the wrong name, no less!* –––– * In all fairness, his origin in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 says only that he is "known as" Flint Marko -- but somehow I don't think that was Stan inviting a later writer to tell us what his "real" name was!!

I'm not a big Sandman fan, but I have to say that's an impressive piece of artwork. The detail to the inking is incredible. And by the way, JB, I have to thank you for providing the details as to what's being asked for in a commission. It's fun to see how you interpret what they're requesting.
