A Hembeck commission and a visit to JB's house. I can't think of two things that could be cooler.

I'm starting to wonder what a John Byrne take on a Fred Hembeck page would look like!

••

You've seen it, if you've seen the FANTASTIC FOUR ROAST that Fred wrote. He did layouts for all the pages. Some artists chose to "interpret" those layouts in their own styles, including changing panel shapes and sizes. I decided to stick as closely as I could to what Fred had drawn.

Ah, the Fantastic Four Roast... One of my favorite company-wide crossovers! And like a couple of the others, Showcase #100 and Abbott and Costello Meet the Bride of Hembeck, done in one!

Ah, what a time it was... Literally brighter than the Brightest Day...

I'm glad that Matt started this thread because I've been meaning to re-scan a number of pieces that Fred has done for me.  (He does his commissions on paper that doesn't really fit my Mustek A3 scanner, so my original scans didn't turn out that well.)

By way of background, the original plan was for Fred to do sketches in the end pages of a few of my bound volumes along the lines of what he did on the back cover to the X-Men Companion Vol 2.  The sketches were to include key characters from the run of comics contained in each volume, but ended up moving from the end pages to full-size paper stock because of the sheer number of characters.

The Fantastic Four volumes contained issues 226-250 and 251-275 and the Uncanny X-Men volumes contained issues 101-125 and 126-150.  (Those volumes are loaded with John Byrne goodness as you all know!)  I still want to get him to do sketches in the end pages of those books, but maybe not quite so elaborate....

There's an incredible amount of detail here, so I'll make sure to upload high-resolution copies to my blog this week and post a link back to this thread.

Great stuff in those Hembeck pieces:

-Medusa tickling Galactus's nose!
-I specifically like Terrax and Man-Thing...wow!  So fun!

I like how The Watcher is becoming increasingly bored with each picture he's
posing for.

The Sunfire/Firelord interaction is cute, too.
