Looking at the image above...

It's a funny thing about Alpha Flight, the complete team never goes into battle together. EVER.

We never get to see ALL of these guys fight anyone...

...has that EVER happened before (or since) in a team comic?

Heh....I was about to "correct" you and say that AF#1 had them all fight
together, but then I remembered - Puck never made it to fight Tundra!
Though the last page of AF#1 WAS, I believe, the only time the entire team
appeared together at one time....

They all trained together in issue 2... but that didn't go so well!

Least interesting or not, I always liked Mac. A lot. He and Heather
quickly became one of my favorite comics couples. I didn't see his end
coming at all. When it came, it felt like a kick in the gut. I expect it'll
still feel that way when I get the trade and reread it for the first time in
many years.

Nathan, I just checked - Snowbird wasn't present at the training :)

Of course, you all know the story of how Marvel somehow managed to keep Mac's death a secret for MONTHS -- or, that is, until Peter David handed out xeroxes of the death scene at a New York con a few weeks before the issue came out.

Just "doing his job" as the promotions guy.

AF#12, gave me nightmares as a kid, because I mistook this:

For remnants of Guardian's head!

Heck, I assumed that was the case until a few years back when JB said here
that that's not what it was.

I recently re-read these as well, including the letters pages from each book, and it's funny how many people wrote letters believing it would be Northstar that would be killed.

One of my favorite (uhhh...is that the right word?) death scenes in comics, ever. Completely tragic, shocking, and horrifying. I mean, we literally see Mac blown apart and incinerated in those two pages.

And, to add insult to injury...

* This occurs seconds after he manages to defeat Box/Jaxon.

* Heather causes Mac's death by accident. And watches the whole thing.

The one saving grace is Mac's "But it's still overheating. I may not--", which hints that Mac might not have been able to defuse the power-pack even if Heather hadn't walked in.

Of course, JB revealed a while back that, had Heather not walked in, Mac would have been successful in disconnecting the pack. Which is yet another kick to the gut!

I should also add that Mac's "return" was a masterstroke. Just out-there enough to be a plausible comic book-style resurrection, but just out-there enough to be suspicious. And, of course, "Mac"/Courtney's story obviously conflicts with what we saw--Mac was clearly blown apart and incinerated, with no chance of being propelled to another planet by the blast.

And then Courtney's fabricated story was used to really bring Mac back later on.

That's ok, Greg - it can still be used to prove that Mac never really came
back at all!

I remember being haunted by this ad for a month when I was a kid. My little brother and I kept guessing who it was going to be. We thought maybe Aurora or Snowbird... Northstar, maybe?  ...but we both kept saying, "It can't be Guardian". I mean, that would be like killing Captain America.

You got us, JB. We were shocked.
