I enjoyed some of the early TOM STRONG stuff, but it has slowly become
less and less interesting to me. The most recent series was the most boring
of all, despite Chris Sprouse's neat artwork.

Promethea is unique (and far and away his best work, to me).  In theory, it's a take on Wonder Woman, but it's so far away that I had to be told it was such before I could see any similarities.

I definitely enjoyed all of the ABC titles when Moore was writing them, but no other writer seemed to be able to make them work.  I'm not sure if that's because there's some fundamental flaw at the heart of the concepts (which I doubt), or because of the general timidity that the following writers had in playing around and building on the foundation.

"Has Moore actually created anything completely original?"

As you mention, nothing's truly original, and I think it's fair to add that every idea has something that sparked it off or influenced it, but, allowing for that, I'd say the Ballad of Halo Jones would count, plus his less-known Abelard Snazz stories.

Ballard of Halo Jones was the only thing that sprang to my mind as well.

Most other things are either a reimagining (some good, some bad) or just straight deficating on existing characters

"science genius kid "

You mean Johnny B. Quick, his "Tom Swift" parody?

Be interesting to run a list of stories / characters against their progentitors

Skizz = E.T.
Watchmen = Charlton heroes
Jonny B Quick = Tom Swift
Tom Strong = Doc Savage
V for Vendetta = Guy Fawkes
D.R and Quinch?

etc

Captain Britain
Marvelman
Swamp Thing
etc

I've enjoyed some of Moore's work but I agree that he mainly reworks other people's ideas-usually pretty well. As far as PROMETHEA I really enjoyed it until the last arc.  Then Moore just spent 12 or whatever issues spouting his philosophy on magic and whatever.  The most recent LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN stuff hasn't been great either.

As far as his contempt for Hollywood I think Peter David summed it up well in his Comic Buyers Guide column when he said something like 'When Alan Moore cries poverty in 10 years or so and the industry gets together to do a fundraiser type thing for him I will not participate. It's his own fault for turning down the money offered to him.'  I admire Moore's perserverance as far as not accepting money for movie versions of his work but it's pretty foolish especially since I believe he has had financial difficulties in the past and 'slummed' by writing for Marvel and DC.
