Description for this one should be fairly self-evident! When I agreed to do this, I asked Jim to make sure the customer wanted Kong as he looked in the original movie, and not just a generic gorilla.

11x17 inches, approximately.

(Anybody know who owns the copyright on the big guy, presently? I'd like to make the appropriate notation, before I send the full-sized image off to Dan, for the Gallery. As usual, reply only if you KNOW, please!)

Cool! The perspective is awesome! I'd imagine the use of a grid is essential on a commission like this.

Incredible! What reference did you use for the planes, guns, clothes, etc? The details seem perfect.

Now I'm off to sing "High Anxiety".

Nice!

JB, I see a Kubert influence whenever you draw apes. I saw it with Grunt and it's in this piece too.

I think a lot of my "fur technique" comes from Kubert.

Just found out something:

Universal Studios owns most of the rights to King Kong. Merian C. Cooper's estate owns the publishing rights.

Now that is a commission I would not have guessed based on the title.  Awesome piece!

Awesome piece, JB.  I love the way you drew the gunner in the foreground.

Does this commission mean you are more open to doing characters like Tarzan or Zorro now?

That's beautiful. The New York background, Kong, the planes, all
amazing. Congrats to the commissioner!

WOW!!!  Now that's one I never expected to see!

Great angle, too... the pilots & bi-plane in the foreground really adds to the vertigo, and nicely frames the image.

Handsome piece!  I think the line weights contribute a lot to the sense of perspective here.

Btw, if a little thread drift can be tolerated, for anyone interested in King Kong (or the early history of aviation and/or movies), I highly recommend the biography,  Living Dangerously:  The Adventures of Merian C. Cooper, Creator of King Kong.

JB -- why no windows at the top? (Were those windows? Seem like portholes...)

With the exception of Kong's fur and the border, which are brush, all the line work in this piece was done with the PITT XS pen, their finest point.

I think you can see why I have come to really enjoy working with that particular nib.

======

What is the distinction between King Kong and other classic characters?  Kong was never a book?

Clint, I'm surprised you never commissioned a Kong drawing.
