I thought there was a commission, but I couldn't remember. That's an
awesome image of Swamp Thing and Abigail Arcane.

Stephen, that seems to sum up Moore's attitude in negotiations quite well.

Many fans take his part in the disagreement with DC over Watchmen, thinking that Alan Moore is taking some principled stand.

They don't realize that, in dealings with others, like Steve Bissette, where Alan is the "Big Guy", Moore is just as petulant and unreasonable.

Thanks Ted!  I don't know why I couldn't post that cover.  Oh well.  I have that WHO'S WHO issue signed by JB from one of the times I met him at MidOhioCon!  Ah, the good ol' days!

I grumbled to the Higher Ups at DC and for the first time heard what I
would come to recognize as a mantra: "Oh, we can't risk offending
Alan!!"

Offending ME, apparently, not such a problem!
===
They should have just gone ahead and offended him. It's just my
impression, but I get the picture that dealing with him is like dealing
with a two year old having a tantrum. They were bound to offend him
at some point anyway and eventually did.

Cary Bates must have taken that attitude with Alan Moore as he used Swamp Thing in a story arc in Captain Atom #'s 16 and 17

••

Surely you're not asking for CONSISTENCY from DC?

Certainly not. Although re-checking Moore had long since departed by the time the Captain Atom issues hit the stands.

And of course, Cary Bates' Captain Atom was also the title wherein Neil Gaiman's Death was established as the avatar of Nice Deaths, wherein the decedents passed away Nicely, while Kirby's Black Racer was the avatar of Warrior Deaths, while Green Lantern villain Nekron was shown to be the avatar of Horrible Deaths...

It sounds like Bates may have had an axe to grind against character exclusivity.
