I wasn't allowed to have ROM due to the ridiculous amounts of Star Wars toys I owned. A couple years before I did get this:

That Zem21 figure was the most articulated I saw until the Marvel Legends collection.

Great comic and one of my favorite toys. The last I remember, my ROM toy had no legs or arms. Loved the sound effects. If I remember correctly I loved the breathing sound.

Ahhh Star Team! Ideal's lame-ass attempt at cashing in on Star Wars and making kids all around the world (myself included) say "MOM!!!! THIS ISN'T FROM STAR WARS!!! YOU RUINED CHRISTMAS!!!!"
They sit proudly in my collection of "hangers on".
and yes, Ideal used Captain Action parts. Waste not...
Rom is the only example I can think of of a toy tie-in comic that was based on ONE TOY.
no poster, no puzzles, no underwear, no party hats....
One toy. Done.
Could you imagine that happening today? No way.
The only other ROM merchandise that exists (that I can think of) are some prints that were made in Europe from Strange magazine covers... and that was 1995! So those were probably illegal...

Hey, waitaminute! Is this a ROM thread? On a John Byrne forum? And no one's posted this yet...? (I'd post the ROM/Alpha Flight issues, too, but I'm betting someone's probably already done that in previous AF threads, so I'll refrain from any redundancy!)

Really like that corner-box image of ROM.

Dave, these 3 are some French made covers for the French editions of STRANGE magazine. You can see my earlier posts.

Ideal's Star Team was and is one my favorite toy lines, then and now. Yes, I immediately spotted it as a knock-off, but hold up a Zem-21 next to the officially licensed 12" Threepio with the linebacker shoulders and only five points of articulation and you can easily spot which is the better made toy. Unless your intent is to hit your brother with it, in which case the Kenner product clearly makes for the more durable weapon. I played with that Zem-21 for years, and I'm extremely grateful to have found one in an antique store some time back. He's currently standing off to my side on a bookcase filled with graphic novels and Scholastic books. I believe I read somewhere that Zem's body was a tricked-out version of their J.J. Armes figure.

Hmmm - I know that Ditko pencilled the issue, but I can't tell whether or not that's a pure-JB cover. Seems like it is, but with a touch of Ditko.

I'm with you Vinny. The female looks like JB, so does the ground. Rom isn't really in JB's style, but it could just be the inker.

(One source I've found says the cover is all Byrne, but I too get a distinct Ditko-esque vibe from the cover, especially the "rogue spaceknights" in the background. Plus, I can't see a "Byrne-only" signature anywhere on the cover, which would be atypical if JB had been the only artist, no?)

That cover - particularly Rom - "feels" like JB inking someone else. I almost get a Walt Simonson vibe from that picture of Rom.

I like this cover -- Byrne inked Hannigan!
