Oh my! That is a real thing of beauty! Soooo iconic. Should have graced the cover of a comic.
How amazing is it that after all this time, and with such an over-exposed character, that you can create something that feels so fresh and exciting without straying from on-model at all? Brilliant!

Something about the eyes... They say to me that not only is he willing to cut you to ribbons, but he'll enjoy the hell out of it too. Great piece!

It's so cool to see the eyeballs in this close-up. I'm so accustomed to seeing no eyeballs on his mask.

It's so cool to see the eyeballs in this close-up. I'm so accustomed to seeing no eyeballs on his mask. •• As I have mentioned before, this is a little something I picked up from Neal Adams. He could pull off the most expressive "blank" eyes, but every once in a while, in a close-up, he'd show us the pupils and irises, faintly, as if there was something like cheesecloth across the eyeholes, and this, of course, took the expression factor to a whole 'nother level.

Sweet!
Apologies to the commissioner, but I would like to offer the following interpretation:
I see this as the psycho Wolverine of the Claremont-Byrne years, pressing his nose against the window of the Hellfire Club Goon Cafeteria.
Twenty seconds later the place will be red all over with Hellfire Club Goon blood! :-)
It´s been SO long since we´ve seen this guy outside of commissions, it almost seems he belongs to a parallel universe!

I sure wish we got to see this Wolverine in the actual books - when I was in college reading the Claremont/Byrne/Austin X-Men, it was my favorite title --Now, as a 50 something adult, I still love those issues. When I see an 'X-book' on the stands now I take a quick look, return it to it's place and just sigh. The Krakatoa commission a few months back really made me smile

JB I was wondering about the visible pupils also, is this something that you wanted to more often but it didn't make it into the final product much? I know there's notable uses of the visible pupils but I ask because I feel like I've seen more with the pupils in your commissions than in the comics.

JB's run featured Wolverine in the proper context. He is the loose cannon of the X-Men and is always on the edge of either losing it or saving the day. But no matter what there was a morality there.
I didn't necessarily identify with Wolverine. Cyclops was the center of the X-Men universe for me, and everything spun around him. I was upset when he left after Phoenix died, but it made sense.
