Originally in the golden Age the shield was just there to be bulletproof and otherwise a pretty normal shield apart from being throwable in the right hands.

••

Shortly after his return, Stan and Jack gave us this scene with Cap in THE AVENGERS…

Later, it was decided that Cap's shield should not be so "high tech", and his ability to throw it with such skill was based on precisely that, skill, not magnetic manipulations. So the above was retconned away as a "spare" shield Iron Man had modified.

Notice that giving the shield a thick edge seems to have really confused the colorist on the second page!

(Historic Note: This is an example of where Stan seems to have written something other than what Jack drew. From Iron Man's pose on the splash, I get the impression he's INSTRUCTING Cap on the use of the new shield, not merely being impressed by how well the good Captain handles it. Probably Stan didn't like the idea of Cap needing instruction from anybody! The dialog in the first few panels of the next page seems not to really fit the pictures either.)

Ahh... very interesting about the drawing of hands and of Cap's shield information. Thanks for the insight.

This just came to thought, do you used different pens when doing the large commission pieces?

With any piece, I use different tools to produce different lines. A finer point for faces, for instance, than for heavy holding lines.

Love the composition of this one. The whole thing is a tumult!

I've thought that Cap's shield just reacted differently when the edge made an impact as opposed to the central mass. Either the angle or some treatment of the metal was different. That's enough for me.

Stunning piece. I'm always amazed at how he can fill a page like this and have all of the players do something interesting and remain in character!
