20" x 30" Commission Request - Avengers vs. Hulk He would like a piece in the vein of the 2008 30 X 40'' " Avengers + FF vs Hulk" piece: LINK Please do make it a night scene with "heavy blacks" on the buildings. (After scanning, I realized I'd missed the "T" on Thor's belt buckle. Fixed on the original!)

Beautiful! I can feel Hank's pain from here. The inking on Thor's upper arm looks really good.

Cool how Cap is blocking the Hulk's blow with his shield.•• A bit of "artistic license" employed, there. Technically, Cap could take a hit from the Hulk, on his shield, and not even feel it. It's an element of the shield that is interesting conceptual, but can be kind of a drama-killer!

Thor has never been one of my favorites, but my eyes are drawn to him on the page when John draws him. This image is no exception! I also keep looking at Hulk's foot, which is just really rich in details. Great commission.

----- Great commission. The space in the page is ALL packed with action!!
By the way, about Captain's shield, recently I've seen him be thrown away by the impact of Cyclops beam, which IS kinetic energy (right?)... In theory, wouldn't Cap just stand calmly still, taking the beam behind the shield, or am I evaluating the situation wrong?

In theory, wouldn't Cap just stand calmly still, taking the beam behind the shield, or am I evaluating the situation wrong?•• According to the mythology, Cap's shield absorbs/deflects ALL energy directed against it. I once postulated he could jump out of a plane, standing on his shield, and the impact would be absorbed, not passed on to him. (There are other considerations, but. . . ) So, yes, Cap should be able to take the full force of Cyclops' beam without feeling it.

Eventhough I believe his body should be smaller, I love the TEXTURE of the Hulk's skin on this.
This is how the Hulk's skin should be drawn in every issue by every artist in today's industry: very rough or coarse.
By the way, another great one by JB!!

As much as I loved the Avengers movie last night...this still tops it!•• A friend who also saw the Avengers movie yesterday insisted on explaining to me why the costumes "had to be" changed. Why Thor, especially, could not wear the "simple" costume Kirby designed. As I was drawing this piece, Thor in particular, I once again found myself asking "Why not?"

JB - I think it's epidemic in the comic book industry as well. There are very few re-designs that were somewhat necessary and well-executed. (Wally Wood's Daredevil, Steve Ditko's Iron Man, the black/blue & red Captain Mar-Vell and Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock are a few of the exceptions), but there are countless cases of artists redesigning characters that already worked visually (from the X-Men's change to individual designs to sales stunts like Spider-Man's black costume).
While I don't mind changes to characters like Iron Man (technology marches on) or the Wasp or She-Hulk (who have no single, established look), On the other hand, I don't think we need to see "feathers" and pouches on Captain America, a modernized Hercules, overly-elaborate costumes for Namor, more "authentic" looks for the Marvel gunfighters, or a different look for the Nova corps every time a new Nova series begins.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I saw the Avengers movie last night, and there's no reason the characters as they are depicted here couldn't have been used. In fact, that would have heightened my enjoyment of the movie.

Wow, once again a fantastic piece. I'm sure viewing the actual 20" x 30" commission is even more jaw dropping. I'm patiently saving up my "pennies" for a commission but this sure put a strain on the "patently" part of it.

Great composition and frame filling as always. Inking has a "fine" quality to it. I'm particularly drawn to the Hulk's right foot as he braces himself to deliver the backfist. So much storytelling being delivered with only images as only JB can do. Congrats to the lucky commissioner.

"I once postulated he could jump out of a plane, standing on his shield, and the impact would be absorbed, not passed on to him. (There are other considerations, but. . . )" **** In AVENGERS WEST COAST # 48, you had him jump from the 20th floor of a building crouched atop his shield and suffering "less of a shock to [his] body than just stepping off a curb!"

I love the texture of the Hulk's skin. I really love how the ledge crumbles under Hulk's foot. I've also really grown to love the way you draw the hulk's head. It makes him feel more like an early Hulk that's still a bit brutish. The sheen on Iron Man's armor is great and the rest of the Avengers are spot on perfect. Excellent job JB!
