It sounds like they really gave you hell on that title-

••

Howard did the best he could to run interference, but I came away from the experience convince the Avengers were not characters that any writer could expect the be able to handle without meddling from On High. Basically, the two guys at the top seemed to want the creative team to be just waldos they could manipulate from off-stage. (Hence, for example, the insertion of and demand for prominence for Quasar, in the main title.)

The EiC didn't "get it"
++++++

Too sophisticated, huh? Like when Bergman had the faces of the audience
reacting to the stage in The Magic Flute...

I guess it's a sign of your professionalism, JB, that I just assumed at the time that you wanted Quasar on the team. You managed to make him fit, from what I recall. Although I need to go back and reread those someday. My memory is a bit foggy on that era of Avengers. But I recall enjoying Gruenwald's Quasar title and being glad to see him as an Avenger.

I enjoyed JB's AWC run, but sadly, I completely missed his writing on
the main title. I left THE AVENGERS at about 270 and didn't come
back until Busiek and Perez came on board at vol. 3.

BTW We never finished the AWC Reading Club! That's why I couldn't find the rest of the splash pages.

Anyone wanna finish that? :)

Yeah that's a great splash but I love the She-Hulk and Cap having a moment of rest.
