Seeing the portrait splashes all together is really cool. Thanks for posting them! (And JB, thanks for drawing them!)

I like the published version best... but this is still cool...

The published one was really cool -- it was so much more dramatic and dynamic than the unused version, it had the reference to the last page splash from Man of Steel, and some really smart colouring.

The original art above showed up in the house ad announcing JB's run on West Coast Avengers, right? I seem to remember four covers being shown, some teasers about the Vision...whatever it was, it got me really excited about issue #42.

I've been looking for it online, but haven't turned it up yet. I'd bet it ran in West Coast Avengers #41, among other places.

Thanks for finding that! Looks like some changes happened between the time the ad was assembled and the actual #46 (which introduced the Great Lakes Avengers). The original Human Torch didn't come back until AWC #50. JB, do you have any recollection of what turned "Vision Quest" from the five-part story depicted above into how it ultimately saw print?

I remember seeing the AWC on the shelf and so wanting to buy it because of the art but didn't have the money or time to start learning a whole new group of unfamiliar characters after having just started reading the X-books.

I remember that add! I thought maybe the Vision was going to be "rebuilt" into the Human Torch. My worldly 13 year old mind was all ablaze (no pun intended) with ideas the story was going to head in.

Lil' Adam loved when JB brought the original Torch back. That was a fun run. Felt like, to me anyway, that anything could happen.

I can remember being a little indifferent with the ins and outs of the continuity at the time, even though JB did a good job or recapping everything that was required to know.
By the time the Torch was back for the Invaders 'reunion' in Namor I was really enjoying the fun of having the character back, but I think I missed out on that fun in AWC -- looking back it was very cleverly written, with little nods like "I must've got something in my eye," and I guess you'd say even an android can cry."

After I spent so much time and effort tidying up the Vision's ridiculously complicated (and contradictory) backstory, other writers (themselves well known as "continuity cops") upended my story and made the Vision's history even MORE complicated!! sigh

I ignored anything that followed. The image of the Vision and the Human Torch, two of my favorite characters, standing together was the best!!

JB, what were your plans for the Great Lake Avengers? What do you think of the direction that Marvel has taken those characters over the last several years?

I find it scary how long ago this all was. It feels quite recent, but it was 23 years ago. Thinking about that gives me a tight feeling in my gut.

When should a writer treat a convoluted continuity as a puzzle that can and should be solved, and when should they just think "This was never designed with a rhyme or a reason; I'm going to choose a version of history that seems to make sense and fits my goals, and just move forward from there"?
It seems like amnesia is often the better part of valor.

This was a magical something that often caused the introduction of some new element to cause story elements that had nothing to do with each other to fall together as if they were all planned as part of a larger whole. One example I had a direct hand in was the revelation that Magneto was the father of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Toss that into the mix, and all sorts of ingredients melded together as if it had always been the plan. When I started doing my homework for my Vision story, I was delighted to see Marvel serendipity at work. Bits and pieces that were spread out over years -- decades, even! -- started to fall together as if someone really HAD worked the whole thing out in advance.

That was an aspect of the MU that I found very interesting. I can imagine how exciting it would be to work on an arc that really started to fall into place and not seem contrived, like it had been planned for years. IMO, that has been lost of late. There are a lot more pieces being forced together, resulting in stories that seem very manufactured.

That's one on the main problems I read very little new work. Every time I go into a comic store...TRYING to spend money on something... ANYTHING.... I find two things:
1. the JB books are gone... or were never ordered in the first place. If they're gone.... I tell them they should have ordered more.... if they never ordered them... I don't go back.
2.Already frustrated, I look for something else to buy... an artist I like, or anything looking halfway decent. 80% of the time, I leave with nothing. Maybe 15%, I'll pick up a TPB of something I've read before. And on maybe 5%, I'll find something that catches my fancy and grab it. I haven't liked art AND story on a non-JB book 3-4 years now.

Hawkeye was my favorite character on the book and having him be reduced to a joke was such a bummer. My interests waned when he had to recruit a bunch of wannabe superheroes, but I did like Mr. Immortal. I read an interview from Comic Interview involving the whole situation, it's unfortunate Mr. Byrne couldn't finish what he started.
