The most notorious would be Wally West or one of the other 'lost' Teen Titans.

Yup, 'cause nothing says gay more than a wife and two children (well, if they're still there post New 52).

Yes. No man with a wife and children has ever turned out to be gay.

By that logic, then it doesn't matter what the established history of the character is. Any character at any time can be revealed to be really gay and the past was just a lie. Even when we saw their thought balloons, actions and motivations being that of heterosexual. Of course, none of this really matters as nothing from before matters.

I fail to see the news in this though. Isn't Batwoman one of their new 52, with her own title and a gay version of a previously straight character? I would think that would already fit their criteria. They also already have a gay member of the Teen Titans, a newly created character. And, they have some characters that were gay from pre-Flashpoint available to them if they desire. I'm all for when creating NEW characters, making them more diverse. But, shouldn't the people reporting this be responding by "What, again? How's this news?"

...but how is it that the LGBT community never seems to be offended by this type of "reveal"?

Are you kidding?  I'm horrified by it!  I don't "need" gay superheroes to be my role models -- didn't as a kid, either.  Although gay characters (Northstar, or Maggie Sawyer for instance) have a special place in my heart, I don't "need" them to feel... I don't know, represented?

DC is coat tailing Obama's statement.  They are trying to make headlines.  I'm sure they are trying to sustain momentum from the New 52 launch.  Not to mention The Avengers is kicking ass at the box office, thrusting Marvel into the limelight.  It's hype, plain and simple.

Such a non-issue, and totally spitting on continuity.

What, is the character going to suddenly put down his fork during dinner and say to his guests. "Oh by the way, irregardless of what I may have ever said or done, or with whom since my origin... I'm gay too. Yep, always have been, and so now all my stories should be gay-centric because now I have a lot of catching up to do."

These kinds of ploys are senselessly hyped as though being gay, or being jewish, or being short, or being anything remotely different from someone else is suddenly the new game-changer.

At least they are addressing all the issues that matter most in comic books. With sexual orientation out of the way I hope they get to all the other meaningful bits about our heroes. I need to know their views on religion. I need to know which hero is a vegetarian. Are they lacto-ovo?
Of course I'm not serious.

It won't be Superman or Batman will it?

I don't buy one DC comic aside for iZombie and their reprint collections of past glories.

Yes. No man with a wife and children has ever turned out to be gay.

No plenty of gay men have turned to marriage to hide. Yet we have seen Wally's thoughts, he has used his wife and his love for her as a focal point to draw him through the speed force back to Earth...I don't know about you but that is a one powerful beard to make him think thoughts of love and to be able to feel a connection through time and space.

This is going to be my problem with it. Hasn't just about every male superhero at one point of another expressed feelings of love or affection for a woman in their thoughts? Who were they trying to fool when they were thinking this? Did they think there was a telepath around that might clock them? I am all for more gay superheroes but not as a retcon. If people can't handle what JB did on Vision they should burn the company down for someone doing this.

Just make more gay superheroes. It is not that hard.

What is it about editorial at both Marvel and DC that they find it so important to focus not on the heroic deeds of the characters they are in charge of but, instead, decide to focus on the minutia?  What's more important; a character's sex life or the fact that they're willing to put their lives on the line to help serve the greater good?  They're not mutually exclusive, of course, but this smacks of stunt rather than thoughtful consideration.  If, for example, it's "revealed" that Wally West is gay after decades of first person narrative that would most definitely say otherwise, then it's absurd.

Keep in mind that "established" in this context means nothing more than "seen before". While it's possible they might "out" one of their major players, it's just as likely the announcement of the character's name will yeild "Huh? Who?" reactions from the fans.

(Remember Hobgoblin?)
