I almost posted the list of artistic differences I noticed between this image and a more current one seen in the commission gallery, but erased it all to avoid a stream of replies where everyone posted what they thought.

It is nice to see something this far removed from the Chief's current artistic abilities and another image for Nathan's "art I haven't seen" post. I understand the cringe every time a friend of family member carts out old photos or video tapped performances of me. So out of respect...

Not to be snarky, but if you can't see it, there's no way I can explain it.

I think you're picking nits JB. The only issue I could see is that the hair
and sash are flowing the wrong way for the flight path you've chosen.
But, the way you have chosen to position them makes the drawing
more dynamic, whether it's correct or not. I think it's a lovely piece.

I don't like my old drawings... so I get where JB is coming from. That said, I still do like that sketch.

If someone really wants to SEE the differences, I suggest a new commission of Jean... based on the pose above. Something like this...

••

It's not "picking nits" to see actual flaws in a piece of artwork.

Based on the flight path, Phoenix is turning to her right, which would cause her hair and sash to trail, at least temporarily, to her left.

So WHO'S picking nits, again?

Nicely done -- even got a "Byrne hand" going on there, with her left!

The red of the costume points up the problem invariably encountered, of course, when an attempt is made to translate into the real world the kinds of "colors not found in nature" we see in comics.

I was able to make this 3D model of Phoenix by using a function of the modeler that allows the reflected light to be an entirely different color from the object doing the reflecting:

Nathan, do you have a higher resolution scan of those Rubenstein inks? I would love to see that "close up". If so, send it to me via FB.

I, as well, and a lot too -- not because I know enough or not to critique the young JB's work... but rather because that old sketch is the JB which first turned me into a fan. Neal Adams could try to explain to me why a Batman he did 40 plus years ago has major faults, and even if I (try to) understand, I really wouldn't. What he did was my Batman! I got blinders, even when I don't!

But where are the pouches, the rubber, sculpted muscles and the textured or patterned surface? Everyone knows when you have a 'live action' version you have to add these :)

Neal's forty year old Batman would not have a tenth as many flaws as my thirty year old Phoenix!

Neal forty years ago was still far ahead of where I am NOW!
