As mentioned in a couple of other threads now, IDW recently asked me to do an 8 page Rocketeer story for them. Another artist, it seems, had failed to meet his commitments, and they were caught short. And who ya gonna call?

Anyway, here's a little sneak peek, from the lettering guide...

And, yes, the other pages DO have backgrounds other than SKY!

Rocketeer, Popeye, STAR TREK, ANGEL... IDW has certainly expanded my horizons!

AWESOME!!!!

That looks great, JB. I know it isn't something the average artist considers important, but your dependability is what makes you professional. And let's face it, you aren't the average artist by any means.

Looking forward to this.

I've been a Rocketeer fan since the PACIFIC PRESENTS days.

"These new Ford Tri-Motors -- safest thing in the air!"

Source THAT, I dares ya!

Do you know the title of the comic in which this appears?  I don't follow the character, but would certainly pick this up for obvious reasons!

I thought it might be a Ford, but I didn't recognize the tri-props on the wing engines.

I love the book and look forward to seeing your story!

Kudos!

I really like how the Rocketeer's body is posed in those panels. Where the page "succeeds" in my eyes;

1) The sense of physics. His body moves in accordance with, or at least regard to, having a back-pack with jet propullsion.

2) Fluidity. Action poses suggest movement, and are not statue-esque. I really like Rocketeer curving his body around the bullets, in particular.

3)As always, JB's composition of shapes and angles that make up the drawings lend them themselves to clear story-telling. Passage of events, reading order, would be clear even if the balloons were not numbered.

Very cool.

Walt Simonson's also been posting Rocketeer pages on Facebook, so I assume that it's for the same anthology.

Very cool. JB, I was wondering when you post little teases like this, do you have to run it by IDW (of whichever publisher) or is it just up to your discretion?

My son and I watched ROCKETEER together for the first time a little while back.  I'll definitely be sharing this with him, he liked the movie a lot.
