20" x 30" illo of Dr. Doom in the foreground looking at a wall of 4 monitors; each featuring a member of the Fantastic Four. The details are:- Please have the monitors odd-shaped with thin borders of Kirby-like tech - Please include the following scenes on the monitors: (1) Reed taking the cosmic control rod from Annihilus (FF Annual #6) (2) The Thing with the pipes wrapped around the Hulk holding him at bay (FF #25) (3) Sue defeating the Pycho-man from your run on FF (4) The Human Torch returning with the ultimate nullifier to stave off Galactus (FF #50)
Draw the FF in costumes as shown in the referenced comics - Perhaps have Dr. Doom working on a weapon as he studies the monitors; it's you call though, whatever you feel works best.
For some reason, the scanned segments of this one were particularly resistant to being fitted together properly, so if you spot any "seams" here, or in the full sized scan, that's why!

Sweet! I love all the detail, especially the texture on Doom's armor. Gives it an older, worn look. Impressive!

So would you consider this a montage?

Very nice, JB.
Reading the instructions above, I got the impression the customer was only asking for one FF member in each monitor. This is much cooler. It is as if Doom is looking into other dimensions or time periods.

So would you consider this a collage? •• Yes and no. When I read the list of scenes, I was immediately struck by how "low key" some of them were. The scene were Reed grabs Annihilus' cosmic control rod, for instance. In the actual comic, he was not even stretching! The moment where Johnny returns from Galactus' "home world" was also not itself very dramatic. I cheated there a bit by including the "Kirby Krackle" that had actually been in the preceding panel. But the overall description of the piece, with Doom looking at images on screens, I felt precluded my taking too many liberties. In an "action montage" such as the Kree/Skrull War piece, I feel I can move stuff around and have actions unfolding that are not exactly as they were originally seen. But I didn't want to cheat that much on this one. So, not really a montage in a literal sense. (One of the things I found most intriguing about this piece was the idea that Doom could monitor and record the members of the FF no matter where they were! Even in other dimensions! That's. . . creepy!!!)

Reading the instructions above, I got the impression the customer was only asking for one FF member in each monitor.•• As did I. But since the chosen scenes were, as noted, not entirely as exciting as we might have wished, I decided to juice 'em up a bit by expanding the point of view.

*I like how it implies that the FF are being watched and recorded by doom at all times. He needs to study them to learn how to defeat them.
* I guess I was writing the same thing at the same time - and yes it IS so creepy!*

This way of rendering Doom's armor that's evolved over the past few years still makes me a nervous wreck when I'm actually doing it. I've said before, it's kinda like when I do one of my nighttime cityscapes, and I am not sure until I lay down the last stroke that it's really going to WORK.To make it worse, in the case of Doom's armor I have that feeling with EVERY SECTION! Okay, the thigh worked, but will the knee work. . . ??

Oh, how I miss this kind of Marvel fun. Great to see you drawing the FF and Dr Doom. There is so much going on!
Nice to see the 'new' FF costumes alongside the old ones; I still can't work out which design I like best. I really like the way you chose to make the 'negative' ones have the costume cover the neck. It looks more snug and superhero-like than the pullover-style necks of the original comstumes.
You seem to get better at drawing the Thing every passing year -- Ben's forearm and elbow looks wonderfully craggy in that top left picture.

In that particular issue, Kirby was inked by George Roussos (as George Bell). Not my favorite Kirby inker, but I nevertheless tried to make this image look as much like his inks as I could without actually losing my own style. Same with the Hulk.

Great piece John. I too really like how you have rendered Dr. Dooms armor in this. It looks way better than Doom having shiney armor.•• My impression of Doom, from the very beginning, was that his armor was a real suit that he found somewhere, and modified to his needs. As such, it should look old and well used, I think. (In his first appearance, in FF 5, Doom's armor was drawn much more "realistically", with practical elbows and knees, rather than the "rubber" ones he later came to wear. Also the upper parts of his arms and legs were covered with cloth, rather than metal. I have wondered for years whether this was Joe Sinnott's doing. Joe doesn't remember -- so long ago! -- but he has told me that Stan encouraged him to do quite a lot of redrawing of Kirby's pencils, especially making faces and bodies less angular. Since that first collaboration, in FF 5, would have been over what today we would call "breakdowns", I would not be at all surprised if it was Joe's attention to historic detail that gave us the original look of the armor.)

Have to echo what others have said. Your rendering of Doom's armor is brilliant. It reads more as metal than any other take I've seen.

Very nicely done. There is a great deal to draw the eye. JB, do you lay down the black ripple on Doom's armor to define the gloss from the shine on the entire figure before you start hatching?

I like the way you draw Reed these days. There's a closer connection to Kirby's Reed than the version in your run on the series (not sure if that's intentional or not).
I was re-reading your run last night, and Reed was more slender in the face that what you draw now. It made him look more academic, whereas the Reed in this commission has more of the "man of action" feel that I see when I read the Kirby issues.
