Alpha Flight being the odd name I think is one of the things that make
it work.
But I am just glad the members didn't end up being Weapon Alpha,
Weapon Beta, Weapon Theta, and Weapon Y.
And Sasquatch has forever become the standard by which all other
Furry giant man-monsters are measured.

Every commission like this makes me wish comics were like they used to be. The big companies are sooooo stupid to waste such opportunity.

That "criticism" posted above was representative a small slice of readers -- and the key part of it is that most who had such negative reactions DIDN'T REALIZE I WAS CANADIAN. Note, especially, the lecture on what Calgary is like -- delivered to someone who was, at the time, LIVING IN CALGARY!Over the years, I have observed this phenomenon many times. Some Canadians -- not all, not all! -- are really sensitive about how their country is presented in the media of other nations. If Canada is not shown as the Wonderful Land of Oz, only BETTER, they get upset. "How dare you show cold winters! How dare you show Inuit peoples living in igloos! How dare you show cowboys! How dare you show garbage in the streets!" Really makes me wonder what they think the United States is like. I mean, do they think New York really looks like Jack Kirby drew it??

Comics are FULL of generalizations. I understand and accept that. I pretty much love everything that was written and drawn in Uncanny X-Men from issue 1 up to 175. John Byrne is a HUGE part of that. By the time of issue 201, it was all messed up. Irrevocably so.

Loved this matchup too, especially as the X-Men only want to go home and hide to avoid confrontation.
Shadowed Sasquatch was freightening (lift and launch a huge plane ?!)...and then Colossus starts the melee !!! Already John Byrne has not a simple villain group assaulting the X-Men (Brotherhood of Mutants like..) it has to be a misunderstanding to have them collide...
GREAT stuff anyway (Colossus skin is perfect...)

well, i have a new favorite commission for 2012! always loved the x-men/alpha flight fights, and this is a nigh-perfect encapsulation of that first clash. sasquatch has rarely looked so ferocious, and i love how the rest of the two teams are really cutting loose. i mean, wolverine going at guardian with claws out? whoa. fantastic work, JB!

@ Carmen:
Yup the Stampede still exists, it just celebrated it's 100th anniversary. The Stampede grounds have changed a lot over the years, particularly the entrance and through expansion. The main grounds and Grandstand, where the X-Men - Alpha Flight fight took place, remaine relatively unchanged.

It allows me to address a little something that's been stuck in my craw for more than thirty years! When I drew that scene, Shooter was going thru one of his period Everything Must Be REALISTIC! phases, so he insisted the shot of Sasquatch hefting the plane had to be "touched up". The weight of the plane bearing down on Walter's hands would have an effect on the metal, he said. So this is what we got: 
Not the metal actually BUCKLING, as it probably would, but little tiny cracks, like you'd expect to see on an eggshell! And who caught flack for this? Why, the guy whose name was in the credits as artist, of course!
