So, once again, DC is replacing Hal Jordan. After all the trouble they went through to resurrect him, and all the difficulties in keeping his timeline current in the Nu52, they're introducing yet another human Lantern (how many does this make now, 6? 7?)

But of course, there's a twist:

They're introducing a new Green Lantern, but I haven't read that this GL will replace Hal Jordan as the lead character in his own book. Did I miss something in that respect?

From what I understand (highlight for potential SPOILERS) Hal is being "removed" from reality for a while, and Baz will be the headliner of the new Green Lantern series for the foreseeable future. Hal will return at some indefinite point in the future. (End SPOILERS)

A masked Arab with a gun.

Yeah -- that's not frightening.

I'm guessing some sort of script from the Quran is tatooed on his arm.

I think the tattoo is supposed to say "courage" or something to that effect.

Of course, tattoos are usually considered haram (forbidden) by most Muslims.

But then the new guy is apparently a car thief as well, so it's not like they're playing in to any stereotypes or anything.

I guess you should have issued a press release. (please note I am being sarcastic.)

This is getting tiresome though. "Create" a "new" character, infuse him with a nod towards "diversity", send press release to the media and wait for the accolades to come in.

What ever happened to creating a good product and then let the world discover it?

I call that the "better mousetrap" approach. "Build a better mousetrap and the World will beat a path to your door.". Been practising it for years.

Which is why, I guess, I keep seeing loudly proclaimed "firsts" that are actually things I've already done.

"Ryan Reynolds is a Gay Terrorist!!!"

The right-wing, conservative blogger headlines start in 3... 2... 1...

Interesting that the ring glitches as it proclaims Simon's fitness for the Corps and says, "Error" as it selects him. Always hedging...

Umm, are you sure he's gay? It is the other GL that is gay, or do they
have two gay GL's?

And the gun;

My understanding that represents his life before
the ring. All pictures of him afterwards, he is without the gun.

Getting rid of Hal Jordan indefinitely? I thought they already did that when he "died" and became the Spectre.

My problem with this is, yet again, they're coat-tailing off an established character. Why not create some thing new?

I mean, I'd be totally cool if someone created a Jewish-Arab-Mongolian/ Scientologist / bi, pre-op M-to-F transsexual / Montessori school kindergarten teacher/ lawyer/ stripper / superhero. I just can't understand why that character would need to be Green Lantern. Or Spider-Man.

Although, considering that Alan Scott was created as a modern version of Aladdin (he was originally going to be named Alan Ladd), I guess an Arab GL is a sort of completed circle for this myth.

This isn't supposed to be the gay GL, but that's the point I guess I was "making" -- they have now shoe-horned two hot-topic traits into this brand name with much ado. Do they really expect the world to keep it straight? (Do they even care?)

Funny thing about that is that Islam forbids the alteration of what Allah has given us. So a tattoo on your arm is not allowed according to the rules-- not to say there aren't Muslims who do it, but it's not a common practice or one that squares with what the boss supposedly has in mind.

I got that the "gay" tag Mark used was humorously intended. In the eyes and ears of the general public who will only hear of this in passing and care not at all, the reaction will likely be "He's gay and Arab?" or "Guess the gay guy didn't last too long..."

Plus, the character is shown holding the gun in costume on the cover of his introductory issue. Hard to imagine it will somehow be off-limits once he has the ring since we do see him right there with both. He and Wonder Woman can team up and shoot tin cans sometime. Superman can find a Kryptonian handgun in the glove compartment of his rocketship along with a concealed carry permit issued by the Science Council. Batman or one of his franchise employees can simply start sniping purse snatchers and alleyway thugs. The JLA and the NRA can start crossing over every summer...

Me, I'm still disenchanted by the implications inherent in a damaged ring apparently making a "wrong" choice as we see in those panels. I'm with Glen on this. Nu Universe, guys. Try creating something, I dunno, New...

I looked at the cover and thought it was a redo of John Stewart.

I already dropped the series because of the endless multi-coloured Lantern stories.

I "love" how DC is trying to play up the fact that he's not caucasian and that he's Muslim.  They're even putting the "exclamation point" on it by just calling him by his last name of "Baz" and not using his first name at all (it's "Simon").  Nearly every other time they advertise something GL-related, they use the full names of the characters or their first name.  But not this time...

And this might be the final nail in the coffin for me in terms of reading comics.  I was darn close right before DC decided to do GL: Rebirth.  With them bringing back Hal Jordan, who happens to be my favorite character, I was excited about comics again.  Now with them "indefinitely"  doing away with Hal, I may definitely stop buying most of the comics I get now.  I've already dropped a lot of titles from them, dropping the rest is the next step.

So for the first time since 1977, I probably won't be buying DC Comics.   "Job well done", DC.*

*said with tongue firmly planted in cheek
