11" x 17" illustration of your Marvel: The Lost Generation characters Black Fox, Flatiron and Oxbow vs. The Mandarin. The details are:

- draw the Mandarin in this costume:

Please draw a jungle/forest background with lots of broken trees and rocks from the battle

"To Kevin, With Best Wishes, John Byrne"

Full sized scan off to Dan, as usual!

Oh, that's just beautiful.  The Lost Generation is one of my favourite series and we, as readers, didn't see anywhere near enough of those heroes.

The texture on Flatiron's armour looks terrific as do The Mandarin's fists.

Congrats to the commissioner of this one, and well done JB.  That's one fine piece of art.

Flipping thru the LOST GENERATION issues, looking up reference on these guys -- after all, twelve years since I last drew 'em!! -- I was once again appalled by the shoddy production values Marvel dumped on this series. Especially the coloring/separations, where characters would not keep the same hues sometimes from page to page!

There's an old saying that one should never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence, but this was a series that seemed tho have WAY too much go wrong with it for it to be entirely accidental!

••

As you may know, Roger Stern and I had plans for addition Lost Generation material. I, especially, had worked out a miniseries called THE LOG OF THE BLACK FOX, which would tell the backstory on this character. My whole idea in creating him had been to present him as "Marvel's Batman", and then do the mini to show all the ways he WASN'T Batman.

Alas, I got screwed over and that was the end of that.

This piece earns the Mandarin his own line on the Character Count Chart.

I think I see a little bit of a John Romita Jr vibe on Flatiron.  Overall, this makes me wish that Marvel would ditch the current crew and make their comics simple and fun again.
