The story goes, around my family, that,
when I was 8, I fell in love with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
We were all traditionally Yankee fans, and, I am now and always will be a Yankee fan, however, at that young age, I saw those uniforms and was smitten!
They had just gotten Goose Gossage from the White Sox, and it was the start of the We Are Family years.

I remember seeing the All-Star Game where Dave Parker (the Cobra. Really, what kid wouldn't be interested?)
threw a runner out on one hop from the right field wall.

The announcers went insane, he got a standing ovation, and may have been the MVP.

Next day, I was out in my Uncle's yard throwing, and my Godfather John asked me who I wanted to be like when I grew up.

My answer: DAVE PARKER.
Serious as hell, too, they say, and trying to throw so hard as to make them keep backing up.

They all laughed, as my Dad is only 5'11" and Mom is 5'3". And caucasian.

"How bout Kent Tekulve?" said my Uncle Ray.
Hilarity ensued.

I just kept throwing harder.

Putting those pencils to work during my free time today...

First one was part of a DeviantART.com gallery piece that I'm planning.  I won't put the whole image up here due to it being not worksafe, but I can see where I'm struggling with getting anatomy straight with foreshortening and perspective in a drawing.

Second is a workbreak sketch where I decided to see how fast I could put together a figure in an action pose (putting the boot-stomp into someone's face).

Joe Smth: The story goes...

=====
Great story Joe.
My uncle was actually part of the umpire crew for the '79 series. His
name is Russ Goetz. For my first ever ballgame in '88 we went to
Three Rivers and he got me in the dugouts. They were playing the
Expos and I had the best time meeting all the players.

That '79 series was my introduction to baseball, and I've been a
Pirates fan ever since. Doesn't hurt that my family is from the
Pittsburgh area anyway. I'd never seen anyone throw like Tekulve and
was a fan of his until his career end in '86 with the Phillies.

Sorry for the thread drift folks, but it's always great when art effects
you on an emotional level.

I had been keeping my pencils busy these past few weeks, but the sketchbook thread didn't appear on-screen for much of that time (my settings are for the past day or so here)...
