The schedules were changed several times. That was how I started out months ahead on FF, and finished months behind, despite having produced one issue per month, every month, the whole time I was on the book.I don't recall that happening during the CAPTAIN AMERICA run, tho. Odd.

Regarding Captain America being behind schedule, Roger says (in the
interview linked) that he'd fallen behind due to some health issues, so it
wasn't JB's fault. He also says that Jim Salicrup was worried that JB's
upcoming marriage might cause him to fall behind schedule.

Byrne never missed his deadlines. That's crazy.

While it may or may not be true that Salicrup was worried about the
marriage causing John to be late, my first thought to this was looking
fondly back to the days when schedules and deadlines were actually a
consideration in the industry.

Byrne: As to the matter of my "making faces", I again invite anyone who wants to to seek out the transcript -- not "selected highlights" -- and note there that the Judge's response to Wolfman's lawyer's demand that I be ejected from the court for such "faces" was "No."

I wonder what Wolfman was trying to gain by lying about Byrne making faces? Was he looking for sympathy from the court?

It isn't necessarily lying. He may actually remember it that way. I've
certainly interacted with many people over the years who have
memories very different than what actually happened. An incredibly
interesting and practical book on this subject is called the Invisible
Gorilla. Great stuff.

I've certainly interacted with many people over the years who have memories very different than what actually happened. •• As I recall, this incident happened on the second day of the trial, the day before I was due to give my testimony. We're not talking here of something recalled weeks or months or even years later. I profess no mindreading skills, of course, but my impression was that, having failed in the "discovery" part of the proceedings to figure out what my testimony was going to be about, Wolfman's legal team was attempting to discredit me before I was called to the witness box. This followed, as some of you may recall, Wolfman having testified under oath that I had not created any characters. Again, for anyone who wants to spend a few boring hours reading, it's all to be found in the transcript, published in "The Comics Journal".* _______ * I have not read this transcript myself. I trust journalistic integrity to assure that the entire transcript was presented, not just edited highlights (as seen above).

Based on what I've seen in courtroom settings, my guess is that from JB's perspective, he was reacting normally to what was going on in the courtroom -- frowning when lawyers or witnesses said things JB disagreed with, smiling when Marvel's lawyers made good arguments, etc.
Meanwhile Wolfman, due to his preconceptions about JB (because JB was a witness for Marvel, Wolfman presumably was predisposed to view JB in the worst possible light) might have perceived that as "making faces."
All I know is that I'm still enough of a kid that it makes me sad when I have to confront the reality of the situation -- creators don't all hang out in the bullpen together, laughing and having a good time while they make comics, all of them the best of friends with one other.

Sean Howe, the author of the book, has recommended his favorite comic books in the latest issue of THE WEEK, and he's included JB's run on UNCANNY X-MEN:

Good to see he picked JB's work and I like his other selections, but I think it was a mistake of him to recommend five different Marvel Masterworks editions. Readers of THE WEEK are mostly comic book civilians, so the Masterworks editions are very expensive and very hard to find. It's too bad he couldn't recommend editions that are more easily accessible.
I guess it;s appropriate that the guy who wrote about Marvel would recommend hard to find editions! That's so Marvel these days....

I first saw the article in the print edition of the magazine. I know we're in a digital world, but it's nice to see Lee, Kirby, Ditko, Romita Sr., JB, and Miller's name in print.
