John may have even homaged himself on the X-Men 141 cover...Take a look at the Iron Fist 14 slash page done years prior to the X-Men cover. LINK

It was a brilliant idea for a cover. Tells so much story in just one static picture. And so very memorable.

I've wondered whether Ed Hannigan should get the "after" credit on the homages, since the original cover sketch came form him.
What was the policy concerning cover sketches back then? We're they mandated by editorial?

Very cool link! I like that they included JB's FF commission and the re-imagined commission.
The original is my favorite comic book cover. I remember seeing it on the spinner rack when it was released. It's now iconic, but I still remember that moment of discovery. Well done, JB and Terry Austin!
Does anyone know who owns the original art of this cover?

Wow, there's more than I knew of. Definitely one of the great comic book covers in the history of the medium. I'm curious JB, are there any of the homages, that others have done, that you particularly enjoy?

JB, did this cover strike you as "special" when you had done it?
I must say that it is a very striking composition. I love how the cover itself tells a story, and also raises questions. It demands that you read the issue inside.

I dig the remake commission quite a lot.

I like the Excalibur piece because of the change in layout but still an homage.

JB, did this cover strike you as "special" when you had done it?•• I'll tell you a secret. Promise to keep it to yourself! When I did that cover originally, I didn't think it was a very good one. I thought the layout/poses were kind of stiff, no action. That's one of the reasons I did the "reimagined" version a few years back.

It is one of the best "what the hell is going on here?" covers, which is what makes it so successful!!

http://www.comicvine.com/homage-covers/12-43734/fantastic-fo ur-1/108-6998/•• It would seem FF1 is definitely the winner! Not surprising, really.
