I just saw the new costumes for the Uncanny X-Men, Cyclops new team. I
was struck by how useless some parts of the costumes are. The utility belt
on Cyclops (and on Magneto (kind of obscured). The boots that almost go
up to the short shorts on Magik (why not just make them pants. The
"skirt" on dark haired woman. Cutout section on Emma Frost going down
to her bellybutton.
Prior to the 90s it seems like the people designing costumes put some
thought into what the character needs in a costumes. Some heroes do
need utility belts like Batman who has a number of gadgets etc but what
does Cyclops need one for or Magneto (does he carry around chunks of
metal to use against foes?)
Just wondering what makes a good costume. Are there certain things a
creator should consider before designing a new character or new costume
for an established character?

A good costume should, first of all, be logical in the context of the powers the wearer possesses. A long, voluminous cape, for instance, is not a good idea for a super-speedster. A lot of flanges and pouches and flaps and what not are not great for a flyer.Costumes that obey the natural form of the body are usually a good place to start. Gil Kane was the master of this. And, of course, it helps a lot if the costume in some way also represents the abilities of the individual. Batman's big cape may not be altogether logical in terms of his actions, but it does help him look like a bat. With the Cyclops costume, above, we once again have a situation where the character doesn't look as if he has one eye.

With the Cyclops costume, above, we once again have a situation where the character doesn't look as if he has one eye.

I had the same thought, Mr. Byrne.
I must admit, and it in NO way detracted from my enjoyment of the tales, I did wonder once, when I was very young, as to why Superman had what looked like a utility belt. In retrospect, though, it looked fine. I think my frustrations were more to do with wondering exactly what was inside Superman's belt.

Who are these characters? Are they new? I can guess Cyclops but I have no clue who the rest are.

I'm a big fan of simplistic costumes, sleek & bold. Contemporary costume design is largely the antithesis of this. I sometimes wonder if the artists who design these costumes are masochists. Seems like some of these costumes would be tedious to draw a single time, let alone dozens of times per issue.

Whenever an artist is designing a costume, he should have a little memo in front of him that says "100 TIMES PER ISSUE".

I think the blonde in the back is emma frosty, there are two blondes on the
team the other is Magik who is in front, the other two in back are mutants
the rescued in All New X-Men. The white costume is magneto. Never
understand why they mess with a great costume.
