"Congrats, JB! Cats are fascinating animals. I can't have one, due to allergies, but I always enjoy watching them. " There are non allergenic cat breeds. My wife and I are both allergic to cats, and after our old tabbies passed away, we were cat-less for 2 years. She pushed me to do some research, we went to some cat shows, and ended up buying a Birman. What humans are actually allergic to is a hormone in cat saliva. Cats lick themselves all over, their hair sheds, and then you have symptoms if there is a cat anywhere in the house. But Birmans have the lowest concentration of the hormone, and their hair does not shed; it falls out at about the same rate as human hair. I have had people to my house who have asthma and who needed to leave my house within an hour back when I had tabbies. But they can handle my Birman with no ill effects. I understand the Egyption hairless cats are also non allergenic, if you want to own something that looks like a shaved bat. They are actually real cuddlers (my vet said "Because they want your body heat".) Anyways, don't despair if you have allergies. If you are willing to pay for a pure bred cat ($600-$900) there are still options.
