It is amazing how cats can disappear when they want to.
Another way to summon a hiding cat: play a youtube video of cats meowing (just make sure it's not aggressive hissing! That would be bad....).

I hope Poe turns up soon! I wonder if the storm added to some anxiety?

I'm sure you've checked everywhere, but here are a few links to give you some hints, I know our cat used a few of these:
http://www.catster.com/cat-health-care/10-hazardous-hiding-p laces-for-cats
http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cats/tips/favorite_hidi ng_places.html
http://cats.lovetoknow.com/Hiding_Spots_for_Cats
Hope you find him JB
Our cats favorite spot was to get on top of the furnace and lay on the heat ducts.

Some of his food has been eaten. Question, tho, based on the time of year and past experience -- eaten by Poe, or mice?

With any luck, Poe is eating them both.

Sometimes cats like to hide in high places as well. On top of the refrigerator, on a bookshelf, high up in a closet. It isn't helping that Poe's dark coloring makes it ideal to hide in the shadows. Hopefully you find her soon.

Here's a dumb question, never having had a cat as a pet: do all dogs come at the sound of a dog whistle? Is there a similar thing for cats? Or does it come down to personality? Would dogs be more likely to investigate such disturbances than cats?

In my old house, there was an area in the basement where the rafters to the floor above where exposed. My cats used to go up into the rafters between the floors all the time and hide there.
We would often not see them for long stretches, but their food would be eaten during the night.
I would recommend leaving some food at various places throughout the house to see if that helps coax him out.
