I hope Poe shows up soon, JB.  My older cat lies in wait for someone to not pay attention when they are going in or out of the house, and will fly through the front door at every opportunity.  Food never lures her back in, but the jingling sound of the little chain at the end of our laser pointer does the trick every time.  I know Poe is too new for you to make those connections with him, but sounds and smells are the way to go right now.

Is the litter box showing signs of use? You could try putting fresh food out in the centre of the kitchen and surrounding the bowl with flour or something similar, you should be able to tell the cat`s footprints from mice if the food is taken.

do all dogs come at the sound of a dog whistle? Is there a similar thing for cats?

Typically, you can train a cat to come to a sound. This is usually apparent with a can opener, certain bags; anything the cat associates with food. Young cats learn quick, but Poe might not yet associate any sounds with food.

Even a trained cat will not come out if they feel it isn't safe.

Checking in regularly to see if the little guy is okay.  Having been on the seeking side of many a hiding cat, I'm sure he is.  But please update us when you can.

Food is disappearing from his bowl each night, but other than that still no sight or sound of him.

Poor fella. Hopefully, he becomes more comfortable with his new home as time goes by.

That kitty's going to be quite the recluse if this keeps up.  Either that, or your dog is figuring out ways to get up to the cat food.  I hope he gets tired of being a hermit soon.

My wife and I adopted a poor cat from PetSmart one day. She had been given up by her owner after 13 years(!), so we couldn't leave her to chance at the shelter and took her home. She ended up staying under our bed for over a week. We've had her a couple of years now and I can't keep her from following me around! She's one of the best cats I've owned. Sometimes, it just takes a little while to come around.

This morning I noticed that one of Florence's cat toys, which has lain under a chair in the living room since she died six months ago (tomorrow) has found its way out onto the open floor.
