On a lighter note, a curious thought drifted thru my brain this morning.

Back in my Charlton days, when I was doing my own lettering, I was already thinking hi-tech. Charlton had long done its lettering with a typewriter with a "hand lettering" font. (Credited to A. Machine!) At the time, I owned an IBM Selectric, the typewriter with the letters mounted on a spinning ball, rather than individual armatures. I'd read, somewhere, that IBM would custom make Selectric balls, and I wondered if I could get one made of my own lettering. I did not get as far as investigating practicality, or cost, as I realized that a typewriter would not be able to produce the proper kerning. Since the letters were treated as if they were all square, there would be annoying instances of W AS, and ADV ANTAGE and the like.

Years later, I would make my own computer lettering fonts, and correct the kerning, so problem solved.

Now, in something that flirts with irony, I am once again doing my own lettering, at IDW, and the computer font chosen does not correct kerning! W AS and ADV ANTAGE return!

Referring to JB's post about communicators and how we have something like that now..............

I always find it slightly humorous when I hear someone (not JB!) say that our cell phones are "the same" or "better" than Trek's communicators.  I always point out that their communicators had the power to reach a ship in orbit.  Our cell phones need cell towers all over the place to pick up the signals and boost them!

And I think the sound quality with the communicators seems a bit better too.

On a related note, I'd love to hear Kirk say to his communicator, "Kirk to Spock" and hear Siri respond, "Calling... Mom".

When the communicators made their debut on TOS, there was really
nothing like them in the real world. They vaguely resembled walkie-
talkies, but wireless and fully self-contained. And, of course, they had a
range beyond anything available in the Sixties. NASA couldn't even talk
to astronauts in orbit with it sounding like it was all being played thru a
fuzz-box!

+++++++++++

And, looking at the real-world half of the equation, the props
themselves were works of genius. Wah Chang threw together an
amazing hodgepodge of items to create that sleek and awesome
design.

Having built a few replicas, myself, I've really come to appreciate the
thoughtfulness, craft, and ingenuity of TOS' props. And, considering that they
were built for a show that was to air on the low-res, often black-and-
white, small televisions of the 1960s, the level of detailing is quite
amazing. Indeed, both the phasers and tricorders had various working
parts that ended up never even being seen onscreen.

While many judge TOS' by today's standards and call it "cheesy", and
the sets/props "cardboard", the level of forethought and detail that went
into them was well beyond what was necessary for the requirements of
the era.

And, just to keep things on-topic, NEW VISIONS # 3 is due to be
released, tomorrow!

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.  I was just thinking the other day that it had been a while since the last one... but figured I was just being impatient.  :-)

Speaking of which, I wonder if I'll cave again and buy the digital Kindle version from Amazon again, since it'll be a few days -- or even weeks -- before I can get to the LCS.

Probably.

Tales of the shoddy props and sets on TOS are a lot like Bad Byrne stories -- they don't have to be true (or even close to true) for people to pick 'em up and run with them.

And when we get Shatner himself talking about the Enterprise model being hung in front of black velvet. . . .*    Well, what hope is there?

_______________

* Okay, yes, in "The Trouble with Tribbles," most likely. But that was a view out a window, and not even the real model!!

Just got my issue of Cry Vengeance . Will probably polish it off tonight.

May watch The Doomsday Machine before hand if I can hold off the temptation of reading.

I've been picking New Visions up via iTunes.  I may hit a comic shop for the first time in years to check out the "real comic" experience.

Just received my comp copies of issue 3 and the trade. There seems to be a slight over-compensation for gain in 3. Possibly my fault.

The trade, on the other hand, looks great. (I refer to the package, not the intellectual content!). All errors corrected (s'yeah, right), and --- so many pages! Again, I try to imagine the reaction of my 16 year old self, great hoarder of TREK pics that he was, if he came upon something like this!!

One glitch, on the trade cover, the image of Uhura is blurred, while all the others are sharp. I'm going to blame that on my recently retired computer, and ask IDW if it can be fixed in future editions.

All together, high marks to the folk at IDW, and my eternal gratitude to Chris Ryall for making this happen!

....And, looking elsewhere, I see I have a new frustration to add to my list: idiots who offer negative comments not based on actually reading the book, but on reading and misunderstanding a positive review!

ARGH!!!!
