Edit: in all seriousness, if you want me to sign some kind of waiver in which I give up any claims I am willing to do that.

Plenty of period costumes in Return of the Archons, City on the Edge of Forever, and All our Yesterdays to use variations on the theme I guess. Plus, Discovery has canonically confirmed the existence of Holodecks in Kirk's Era (even if they had limited tech on the Enterprise until TAS at least).

A few days dealing with a penicillin allergy left me with my face all puffed up.. Nothing goes to waste, however! Took a few "selfies" and used one of them to create a displacement map for the modeler. Now, are we ready for a crossover with THE LORD OF THE RINGS?

A very old school Star Trek-y plot, and I mean that in a positive way. I don't see many television writers do something like that these days. (perhaps on Stargate SG-1 back when it aired).
I am trying to think what Star Trek Discovery would do with this premise but that is not a fair comparison. It would probably be very Burnham focused any way.
Anyway, I don't see this work any more with a cast that is not beloved by many.

Playing around with the "updated" Bridge model. Enjoying how "dark" it looks. Very evocative of the early first season.

Weirdest review maybe ev-er!LINK Apparently, the photomontage approach of NEW VISIONS gives this writer an upset tum-tum, causing him to miss the rather important point that other than the visual technique, I am doing in this book what every previous STAR TREK writer has done: telling stories about these characters. Yet, for this writer, I am using the characters as "puppets" in my stories. Which raises the question "as opposed to what?" Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley et al did not specifically pose for those drawn and painted comics -- except in the same way they "pose" for me. How is it different, then, if an artist traces a photograph, or skips a step and uses the photograph directly? In the end, this is yet another manifestation of something I've seen in too many fans and self-appointed critics: if it's different, they don't like it. To this particular "reviewer" I can only say this: go take a couple of Tums and get over it. (The writer loses a lot of credibility when he tells his readers that photocomics are called fumetti in Italy. ALL comics are called fumetti in Italy. The term means, roughly, "puff of smoke" and refers to the balloons, not the photographs. It is on this side of the Pond that the term has taken on a more narrow meaning.)

If anything, the big draw of this series should be the fact that the characters and the visuals are not being filtered through an artist's pencil. They're right there on the page! Like they walked off of your TV screen, and into a comic!
With most prior TREK comics, you have either blatant photo referencing/tracing, or freehand stuff ranging from reasonably-recognizable to horribly off-model. NEW VISIONS sidesteps those issues entirely. Unless you're very well-versed in the episodes, it's usually hard to pin down where the various still images come from.
I don't think being asked to just sit back and enjoy the stories is too much to ask.

Frankly, I don't get the criticism. The use of photos by JB to tell new tales is pretty darn cool, and it should be clear to anyone with knowledge of the series and some brain cells that the book is not a simple cut-and-paste job. There is a lot of work going into the visuals as there is the stories.
It seems some people just have to look for something to hate. Since what JB is doing with NEW VISIONS is different from other comics, even distinctly different from other fumetti style comics, it seems to be something for detractors to jump on and single out for some criticism. Instead of admiring the work going into it, these people seem to dislike the photo art simply because it is different.

That negative review reminded me to check online if the new trade is available now for preorders - and, indeed, it is.
Volume 7, collecting issues 18-20, 128 pages, is coming out on August 7th.
In the end, something good came out - fumetti preorder price guarantee.

After tinkering with the updated Bridge on several pages, I've discovered the impact on production time is truly prohibitive. Cuts me back to a page a day on any Bridge shots, which is just not acceptable with a 40 page book on a bimonthly schedule. Allows for no "wiggle room" at all.Ah, well! File under "The Best Laid Plans..." Maybe I'll find some other use for the model.

Yes (for an example, see here). I assumed it is an early placeholder, that the final cover will be the usual collage of images from all the stories within.
I noticed something else, in the textual description - the final story is titled "True Love Like Ghosts" instead of "Isolation".

I have little doubt that you'll eventually find some use for it, even if only as a one-off!

I have little doubt that you'll eventually find some use for it, even if only as a one-off!•• The first idea to flash into my head was that the new systems might be installed on another ship, and then go wrong in some way that ends up with the Enterprise having to battle a "living" starship. But, that seems vaguely familiar, somehow. . . . (One of the rules I've developed for myself, as a writer, is never to trust stories that pop into my head fully formed. They probably came from somewhere!)

Mr. Byrne, that concept sounds somewhat like "The Ultimate Computer", save that the conflict would be external to the Enterprise instead of internal.
But I'm extremely confident that you'll determine some use for it. You're innovative that way...

Received my comps of 19 today. Very pleased with how my first double page spread (and first full bleed) came out. If you'll forgive a towering immodesty, most Kirby-licious!Still need to be heavier on the blur on the CG backgrounds, tho. And even more brightening of the pages as a whole.
