Always liked the cover of Batman #9; not sure, but I think DC reused the shot elsewhere for ads and such, and I saw the pose there before I ever saw a photo of the cover.  Always liked that Batlogo as well--it's the one I grew up with as well--and it's better when it's big and prominent, rather than shrunk.  There was another bat logo that I thought was pretty good, I think Infantino designed, with the suggestion of the cape drawn across the face, much like it is [on the cover shot of B & R itself, not the logo] on the cover of #9--it didn't last long, as I recall.  Hard to trick out any one influence in the art style here, but certainly some Dick Sprang shines through in the treatment of Batman's face--always a good thing.  Really nice job working out the shadows cast by the figures and using them as a design element.  I would think the commissioner (do we have a JBF member named Gordon--ouch)--would be very pleased.

Another element of comicbook history is contained in this reimagining, and that's the 10¢ cover price. Mythology insists that comics were "only 10¢ for decades" and it was not until the Sixties that the price started creeping, and then leaping up.

Of course, that's not really true. Altho issue 9 was 10¢, it was 64 pages, not including the covers. 119, my first, still had that 10¢ price tag, but the page count had shrunk to 32. And even tho 32 remains the standard, the ad count increased, reducing editorial content.

Heck, when I started in comics, the cover price was up to 25¢, and the editorial page count was down to 17!!

Nicely done, JB.  I am digging these Golden Age-inspired drawings.

I'm with William re: the inks - love 'em!

I can't quite put a finger on why I prefer certain inking styles that you've
played with over others - I think my brain just responds better to seeing
thick and lush ink strokes, but when you nail it, you REALLY nail it!

I'll say again that lately your inks are reminding me of George Perez.

Interesting take on Batman on this one - feels like ' "Bob Kane" meets
Frank Miller' to me.

Better or worse?

I'm probably too used to the way it normally looks.
