I also like the idea (by Jesus I believe posted upthread) that the film is a take on THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE UGLY with Superman, Batman and Luthor...really pumped if that is their take on this!!!

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY is about three characters who are completely self-serving. There is only a distinction of degree -- who is the WORST, not who is "better".

Not my idea of a good model for Superman and Batman.

If you want more stories about a character who is Batman in name only
-- and then only when Mr. Director allows the name to be spoken! --
you will doubtless be happy with a "mash-up" of a character who is not
Superman with a character who is not Batman.

Me, I'll just watch them shoveling more dirt out of the pit that is
becoming the characters' grave.

At least they'll have golden coffins, right?

There is a different direction that DC could use to
approach Superman vs Batman than we comic fans think.

Civilians have been arguing for years, who is the better
Superhero: Superman or Batman? This movie could be a way
to answer it, though it can truly never answer it, but it
can leave Superman fans saying, "see Superman is better",
or Batman fans touting "Batman is better".

Of course that could be harder than just a Marvel style
fight.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. In fact
they can work well together, if the movie concludes that
together they are better than separate. But fans will
still have their favorite.

That line from DARK KNIGHT -- even the entire fight scene from DARK KNIGHT -- only "works" if you're dealing with a Superman and Batman who were (and perhaps even still are) close friends. There's a bit in the first issue when Superman leaves a message (as Clark Kent) on Bruce Wayne's answering machine, saying he'll be out of town for a while. I've worked professionally for about 20 years now and I can tell you that I don't tend to alert former colleagues of my whereabouts... especially if -- at best -- we only had a grudging respect.

I read DARK KNIGHT as two brothers who are now at odds. This is something that was missed from other creators who insisted on having them as bitter rivals in the present day.

There's no chance in heck this movie would be handled in a way that I could enjoy so I already know I won't be seeing it.  The Superman/Batman relationship dynamic is one of the big reasons I pretty much have zero interest in any Post-Crisis DC comics.

JB - I meant more in terms of plot (not as character analogues) when referencing the GOOD, BAD and UGLY.

3 great characters using brains and brawn against each other...team ups, betrayals, alliances, etc..I think it would be damn cool.

Either way..I am excited for what is in store in 2015!!

Sounds like a fanwank cash-grab to me...but that's been most DC movies.

Too bad that Sandman movie got trapped in development hell.  The draft that Elliot and Rossio did when Roger Avary was attached as director was pretty great.  (of course I think the leech Jon Peters killed that one)

Any news on the title to the movie?  Obviously they wouldn't call it WORLD'S FINEST and I can't imagine them using either character's name in the title (that would be embarrassing ya know?).

Sounds interesting..!

Thinking about my own question above, here's what I would guess.  The title of the movie will go one of two ways:

1. It will not have an official title.  It will become known as "The Superman/Batman movie" but officially the title will just be the two characters' symbols (sort of like when Prince was a symbol back in the 90s or whatever).

2. They will go with a combination of the horrible titles for the recent films and it will be called STEEL AND DARKNESS or something as equally stomach-churning.

"horrible titles"?  "stomach-churning?"

"Man of Steel" and "The Dark Knight" are at least a bit more clever titles than any "BATMAN 2" or "Superman Returns". Its hillarious how you think its "Horrible" to have titles like that. Do you start puking when the characters are refered to that in the comics too?

I don't think Superman/Batman or  Batman/Superman as the recent comics have been called would be "awesome" titles either,  but I wouldn't hate that title either.

Superman vs Batman is a stupid title: it says that the whole movie will be about them batting.

As a working title Superman - Batman would have been better. It's part of the superhero subtext, I guess, that first encounters have to lead to fighting.

Also, fans would bitch that it should be "Batman & Superman" rather than "Superman & Batman" and vice versa.

How about simply "Man of Steel - Dark Knight" or "Dark Knight - Man of Steel"?

Or "Man of Steel,  Dark Knight, Prince or Lies".

Or, "Superman / Batman: Prince of Lies"

Long titles like talk would draw in the Harry Potter and Loki crowd;)

At any rate, the title should suggest that we are getting 3 strong characterizations for the price of two. In my opinion, Michael Shannon stole the show in MOS and Tom Hiddleston in Thor (almost in Avengers).

The first motion picture showcasing Superman and Batman should feature a villain that almost steals the show. Not a cookie cutter villain that's around just to stir thing up. Both Zod and Loki are compelling because they fight for a cause that they believe in. We need a lot of that in this movie.

*******

MAN OF STEEL and THE DARK KNIGHT in isolation are not horrible titles.  What absolutely sickens me is the obvious effort they've gone through to totally distance themselves from using the names of the characters.  No Batman in the title of his last two movies.  No Superman in the title of his movie or even BARELY mentioned within the film itself.  Embarrassing, plain and simple.  So a title like I mentioned would completely disgust me.  Very different from Batman being referred to as "The Dark Knight" within his own comicbook.

I liked the titles the DARK KNIGHT and MAN OF STEEL - it really shows the comic book roots of both characters and is more imaginative that Batman 2, Batman 3, etc.

Speaking of Superman, this made me chuckle...

Found this more entertaining than the entire Man of Steel...

Sometimes less imagination is not a bad thing. I don't have a problem
with either movie title but I also don't remember anyone complaining to
me about the titles Iron Man 2 or 3.

Lot of negativity lobbing around here, guys. They've only just announced the film for goodness sake!

This isn't a movie that is just going to spring up spontaneously; with Snyder, Goyer and Nolan involved, it's a reasonable assumption of what to expect.

I wish someone (interviewer or otherwise) would have the balls to simply ask this one question of Snyder, Goyer and/or Nolan:

"Why do you continue to make superhero films that aren't appropriate for children in any way, shape or form?"

@Jeff Tulley

The book was called Tales From Development Hell: The Greatest Movies  Never Made? by David Hughes

The Sandman chapter is pretty interesting.  Jon "I want Superman to fight a giant spider in the third act" Peters basically came on board and gutted all the awesome out of the project.  (even when Neil Gaiman was surprisingly happy with the script).

Ick, I love it when they base the movies on actual comics, but I hate it when they base the movies on the WRONG comics. :P

Well I like the titles they have used. A breath of fresh air regarding the names of superhero films. And I think they used the  hero names frequently in the films. Well the Batman-films that is, they only named Superman after 90 minutes of the film. Its not like they refer to the characters as "Man of Steel" and "Dark Knight" throughout the films. I think Batman was mentioned as The Dark Knight once.
