September marks the 12th anniversary of the publication of the last issue of X-MEN - THE HIDDEN YEARS, which means it's been several months since I drifted past the anniversary of actually finishing that issue, and with it the last work I am ever likely to do for Marvel.Yes, "ever" is a long time, I know, but there is something very appropriate about XHY being the coda to my association with the company that once meant so much to me. When I began actively pursuing a career in comics, my number one dream project was restarting X-MEN, picking up where the series had left off (issue 66). It was 1972, or so, and the Thomas/Adams/Palmer series had been banished to reprint limbo for only a few short years. Surely SOMEBODY should be doing something about brining it back? What I did not know then, of course, was that Len Wein and Dave Cockrum were already agitating for the "return" of the X-Men, but with an almost completely new team. Nor did I have any idea that my intersection with the X-Men would happen there, with that new team, some five years later. (Only five years! It seems so much longer than the 12 that have passed since the demise of HIDDEN YEARS!) So, a kind of symmetry -- where I wanted to start is where I actually ended. Works for me.

"...and with it the last work I am ever likely to do for Marvel."
Sadly I guess it's true, "You can't go home again".
I do however like symmetry.

12 years already! Man time flies! Although understood,I still cringe when I hear you say your return to Marvel will never be.

JB,
You've mentioned on here before how it strikes you that your fans see your work and creations just as "real" as what Stan, Jack and the others did at Marvel Comics. With that in mind, and appropriate to this thread, I thought you'd like to know that a year or so ago I read X-MEN beginning with Stan and Jack's first issue, chronologically all the way up through the Neal Adams issues and then went right into your Hidden Years series. There are some gems in the very early Stan/Jack days and some of Neal's issues are pretty spectacular but Hidden Years is the best and certainly the most consistent of the whole original X-Men series!!!
There ya go. My two cents.

So easy to be sentimental and sad about this simultaneously. To say you are a rare breed is an understatement, Chief. Your impact on me from the characters I loved growing up is permanent and as much as I would love to see you return, I can't help but think we are better off seeing you unencumbered and free to do as you please. A subtle nod to Chris Ryall.
You can be damned sure I am raising my kids on your creations. We could use a lot more like you, JB, but I'm thankful for the singular "you" we got.

True. I wouldn't trade what we've gotten from JB instead though!

Doesn't seem that long ago. Time flies, enjoy it while you can.
Even though we haven't had any of the Big 2 the last few years from JB, the commissions and IDW stuff has been great fun.

"Works for me". ----- It's not only a question of "works for me". It's weird, maybe, but when we close a circle, we are, usually, out of the equation, no matter how much we try to get in again. I don't know if the chicken comes first than the egg, in that cases, but, doesn't it goes like this?
