Steve L:  "Well, if there is a JB X-Men Artifact edition and Terry sees how cool it is, he might change his mind and we'll get a TA X-Men Artifact edition.. then we can buy both and make complete books out of them ;) "

****

Since all of the UNCANNY X-MEN work was inked by Terry Austin, I would hope that if IDW would publish artist commentary, they would include thoughts and comments by Terry.  If the edition is select pages and not full stories, commentary from Terry about how he inks JB work would be interesting.  They certainly have good stories about those issues!!  :-)

I like that they will release an edition without full stories.  I love my JB Fantastic Four Artist's Edition, but I just look at the art. I haven't been reading them as comic books.  I prefer reading them as stories in their printed form.  With the Artist's Editions, I'm looking at the technique and marveling (ahem) at the artistry.

JB: "I was originally resistant to IDW doing "Artist's Editions" of my work -- and this is why! No false modesty here, but I don't feel like I really have a place in that "club". I mean, LOOK at the work there! Makes me want to find honest work!"

*****

Your run on FANTASTIC FOUR showed everyone who came after you how to make the team relevant, interesting, and cool again.  It was the bridge that showed modern readers something that had been forgotten - Stan and Jack's approach works if you stay true to the characters.  Your artwork on that book is just as dynamic and vital today.

In other words - you are definitely in that club!!  Did they send you the monogrammed robe yet?

Tim, I look at the Artist's Editions the same way but for a different
reason.
I've opened every one of mine with the actual intent of reading them.
Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, by the
time a get to the third or fourth page, the art and page construction
pulls me in and I can never finish the actual reading of the story.

Everyone involved with these books should be commended. Scott
Dunbier and crew do an amazing job of tracking down this material
and working out the logistics to get them to see print. Just an amazing
job. I don't even want to think about how much work it must be.

Off hand I don't know who the graphic designer is for these books but
I hope they are well paid. The pages before and following the artwork,
as well as the chapter breaks are just absolutely first class. Each
book's are different and fit the book title and artist perfectly. It really is
some of the best graphic design work I've ever seen come out of the
industry.

Came across the blog of the graphic designer for IDW's FF Artist Edition, among others, and his personal insight on the projects:

JB take it from me, you've earned a place with the rest of them - on sheer staying power alone. ;)

Seriously, you've kept on producing great work all these years.  Your art has only gotten better.  There are not many artists I can think of who have been able to do that with their careers.

I could see many Artist Editions of your work: a Superman, another FF, Batman - Captain America (that would be so nice in the AE format), Namor (some really nice art on that series that would be lovely to showcase as an AE).  The possibilities just go on and on in my imagination.

I'd like to see some twice-up books produced by IDW in the Treasury Format....say a HUGE crossover in the Byrneverse. TRIO, 3X, and, y'know, the new guy.

JB can do 'em at the old Wally Wood sized pages, and sell 'em for astronomical prices, which they'd be well worth.

Yep.

Actually Joe, I think the twice up books that IDW has published so far
are BIGGER than the treasury format books from the 70's and 80's.

These books print the artwork at actual size. So, to get a twice up
book of JB's work, he'd have to draw it at that size.

Daredevil: Born Again is an apt title, since reading it as an Artist's Edition made me feel like I was reading a story I'd never seen before.  Really amazing work.

The Joe Kubert TOR: AE came out this week. Did anybody pick one
up? I'd love to hear about it as mine is lost to the winds!

The Joe Kubert: Tor is great, its twice up along with complete stories they
have wraparound covers and some incomplete stories. Many of the pages are
unfinished inks and pencils. Another AE I highly recommend.
