This is, of course, why "artistic license" is so important in the realm of superhero fiction. If we start thinking about how these characters and their powers would "really" work --- well, pretty much NOTHING would get done!!

***

Shouldn't the writers think that way just a little though? When writing Superman, shouldn't the writer think about how his powers would be used? Sometimes I think the character is underwritten when it comes to the use of his powers. I have often wondered if characters like Darksied have super speed because they seem to be able to punch Superman at will. I understand that the bad guy needs to whup up on the good guy in these stories to make them interesting and to make the reader invested in the hero. BTW John, ecellent work as always.

Superman, because of damage caused, and realizing the Hulk is essentially an innocent, would probably try to calm him down, reason with him, avoid more fighting.

The Hulk is volatile, though. Doesn't take much to set him off. And, of course, there's always the element of "how can something so big move so fast?"

So, if Superman is trying to reason with what he thinks is a slow-moving, calm Hulk...maybe he leaves himself just open enough for a shot like that...

As I was working on this piece, I found myself wondering about whether it could "really" happen. As my title suggests, it would certainly have to be a sucker punch, one Superman was unprepared for -- but would it really be possible for the Hulk to sucker punch Superman? Not exactly known for his stealth abilities, our Green Goliath!

The nature of Hulk and She-Hulk's bodies and abilities is that they have lots of bulky muscle and they're hard to hurt. So they're not particularly fast or agile. That doesn't matter because hey, when do they need to jump out of the way of anything? They're brawlers, not ninjas. See the definition of "hulk."

So when a story has (say) She-Hulk doing complex acrobatic maneuvers, it pulls me out of the story a bit. Or, if Hulk is able to grab Spider-Man or another fast, agile character. Can't happen!

It's an example of "feature creep," as far as I'm concerned. It's not enough that Jen can survive being shot by a tank cannon, and then punch a hole through the side of it and have some choice words with the driver? She also needs to be Bruce Lee?
