It is about school in the future. In this system, all classes are taught through television and students all learn at home. Students get to decide what classes they wish to attend and teachers get paid by how many students sign up for their courses. As a result, teachers resort to tricks to get attention. One dresses up as a clown, another wears a bikini, etc. There is an older teacher who decides to teach the old-fashioned way. That's all I remember. I am thinking it was 1960's sci-fi but I can't be sure. Any ideas?

It sounds vaguely familiar to me. Maybe a Kurt Vonnegut story?

Was that not an episode of the SUPER FRIENDS? Where society is so totally automated that no one has to go to work and Marvin can attend his classes via TV from his backyard hammock?

I have never watched the Super Friends so I know it can't be that. Vonnegut, huh? I probably read the story in a short story collection so it might fit.

Do NOT give him a Superfriends DVD. If you didn't watch that as a kid...uh, let's just say it doesn't hold up. :-)

And I love that this is place where somebody can ask about a fiction short story and get suggestions that it was either a Kurt Vonnegut story or an episode of the Superfriends!

I grew up in a small town surrounded by mountains so Saturday morning Cartoons were something I had only heard about.

No other ideas about the story? Does anyone know another forum that specializes in this sort of question?

I tried looking online for you Neil, but everything I was typing in just kept bringing up 10 million + results. I don't know of another forum offhand to direct you to. I'll do some more research on Vonnegut and see what I find. It just feels right to me, but I could be wrong.

Let me know if you find what you're looking for. I'm genuinely curious what story this is!
