11" x 17" commission of the Angel; no backgrounds. The details are:

- please draw the Angel in-flight wearing the same costume as in X-Men: The Hidden Years

- horizontal layout to maximize his wingspan; please draw something similar to how you drew his wings in the following commission:

Here we see an example of one of the classic problems with winged characters -- especially those with BIG wings, like Angel or Hawkman. I have often joked that such characters always have to stand at the back, so as not to obscure other characters who take up less space, but there is the other problem that, with wings spread, these guys DON'T take up much space. Frustrates my usual intent to fill up the page as much as possible on these pieces without backgrounds.

Man, those are some nice looking hands. While you do it with ease i
struggle to get the fingers to work in that perspective. It's not as easy
to pull off as it looks. Great Job JB!

The trick -- if it can be called such -- with hands is the same as with much else in comic art. Find a stylization that works. The hands in this drawing (or any drawing of mine) are far from photorealistic, but they look like hands, work like hands, and that's what matters.

Fantastic!

I always liked your take on Angel, JB - even during in your time on UNCANNY X-MEN, his uniform looked best through your pencil.  And you could always capture the motion of flight in an amazing way, especially by the time of HIDDEN YEARS.

Angel always strikes me as one of few X-Men who is always having fun with his power. Case in point, this drawing!

I never put any thought into the difficulty of drawing Angel's wings. They have to be symmetrical and so alike as to look like a mirror image without actually being a mirror image. The mind boggles.

Open spaces in the wings leads to the light and fluffy sense of wing-ness.

Mr Byrne, not sure I've said this before, but I always felt your wings on Angel had such gravitas. :)
